Red Devils Sweep Bears in Conference Opener

(Collegeville, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team made the most of its return to the diamond, sweeping Ursinus College in Saturday's Centennial Conference opener. The Red Devils outlasted the Bears, 11-9, in 10 innings in the opener and erupted for 17 runs in the nightcap, winning a 17-12 slugfest.

The Red Devils scored three in the first of game one with Alex Jacobson (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) leading the way with a two-RBI single.

The Bears countered with four in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Brian Reilly (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro) put Dickinson back on top with a two-RBI double in the second, scoring Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) and Max Brown (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis).

Brown doubled and scored on a single from Thompson in the fourth to make the score, 6-4. Alex Mume tied the game in the bottom half with a two-run homerun.

Thompson hit a sacrifice fly to score Chris Delsandro (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and Brendan Pell (Delran, N.J./Penn Charter) singled, stole second and scored on a wild pitch. Reilly doubled to score Brown in the eighth, stretching the lead to 9-6.

The Bears manufactured three runs on just one hit in the bottom of the ninth to extend the game. The Red Devils wasted little time, scoring twice in the 10th for the final of 11-9. Pell singled and scored again in the 10th and Brown scored with Thompson and Jacobson earning RBIs to secure the win.

Jacobson went 3-for-6 with three RBIs while Thompson drove in four runs and scored two with a pair of hits in game one. Brown went 2-for-4 with two walks and five runs scored.

Billy O'Neil (South Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) and Tommy Koide (Morristown, N.J./West Morris Mendham) combined for 10 strikeouts while Reid Collins (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford) came on for the win.

The Red Devils exploded with five runs in the second and six in the third to jump out to an 11-3 advantage in game two. Brown drove in two runs in each inning while Thompson drove in two in the second and doubled in the third to keep his day going strong.

The Bears pushed across three in the fifth before Alex Cohen (Newtown Square, Pa./Penn Charter) cleared the bases with double and Jacobson added an RBI in the seventh to stretch the lead to 15-6.

Ursinus looked to rally with two in the seventh and four in the eighth but Dickinson would hold on adding RBIs from Jacobson and Pell for the final of 17-12.

Brown scored four runs, drove in four and had two hits and two walks in the nightcap. Jacobson went 4-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Delsandro had three hits and scored three runs, and Thompson had three hits, two RBIs and come across once.

Ethan Collins (Elmer, N.J./Arthur P. Schalick) went six innings for the win with a solid relief effort from Anthony Francioso (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton East) and Alex Gusikoff (Ardmore, Pa./Malvern Prep).

The Red Devils improve to 5-11 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference. They are scheduled to host Muhlenberg College on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 pm.
