(Baltimore, Md.) – The #10-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team struck early, scoring a pair of goals in the opening five minutes and despite a great effort and solid performance from Dickinson, came away with a 4-0 decision on Wednesday afternoon.

Maddie Brown-Scherer put the Blue Jays on the board, scoring just 2:01 into the contest and Sadie Abboud doubled the count with 9:52 remaining in the first quarter.

The Red Devils settled in and maintained their composure, forcing a pair of penalty corners on the other end. Sophomore Amanda Fruman (Owings Mills, Md./Garrison Forest) had a good look off a rebound from a shot off the stick of Hannah Spiri (Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley) but the ball crawled just wide of the cage.

The Red Devils continued to apply pressure and held possession for a good part of the remainder of the opening period.

Unfortunately, the quarter came to an end and the Blue Jays hit the reset button to start the second, capitalizing quickly again, scoring on a penalty corner just 15 seconds in to stretch the margin to 3-0. Bryn Rolon put a shot in the corner with an assist from Abby Birk.

Dickinson kept coming, putting shots on the net from Emma Godfrey (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) and Maddie Dombroski (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) before first-year Elsie Harrington (Katonah, N.Y./Berkshire School) served a well-placed through ball into the attack but the Blue Jays were able to hold.

Heather Meeder (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) kicked away back-to-back shots with a pair of huge saves. She followed up with two more big saves, knocking two shots out of the air on penalty corners.

Dombroski served a pair of nice crosses into the circle, leading to back-to-back corners and a big save from Kaitlin Hall on a blast from Spiri, late in the first half.

Birk appeared to have her second goal of the game, scoring on a corner but it was waived off, keeping the count 3-0 at the break.

Hopkins forced another early corner in the second half and Meeder kicked away another shot. The Red Devils held on three straight corners, but the Blue Jays followed up with another score on the next possession as Tessa Erikson finished an assist from Myra Granato on the back post.

The Blue Jays added more corners at the end of the third, but Meeder and Red Devil defense were able to hold.

First-year Saige Stevens (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) came on in the fourth quarter and immediately faced a shot, turning it away for her first collegiate save and kicked away another later in the period.

The Red Devils put together some strong attacking runs in the final minutes, but Hall and the Blue Jays were able to secure the shutout.

Meeder finished with eight saves for the Red Devils while Stevens stopped both shots faced in the fourth.

The Blue Jays outshot the Devils, 19-9 and held a 13-4 advantage on penalty corners.

Stevens finished with two saves as Hopkins improves to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the Centennial Conference.

The Red Devils move to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the conference. They return home to face Washington College on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
