#10 Red Devils Claim Season Opener 13-10

(Sparks, Md.) – The #10-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team finally gained some separation in the fourth quarter to claim its season opener with a 13-10 victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland at the U.S. Lacrosse Headquarters and National Training Center.

The game was a defensive battle throughout the first half with the Red Devils taking a 4-3 lead into the break after senior Jack O'Connell (Sands Point, N.Y./Westminster) found the net at the 1:44 mark.

Senior Joel Mayo (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Berkshire) traded goals with Max Groen as the first quarter ended in a 1-1 tie with Ross Snodderly turning away seven shots in goal for the Seahawks.

Brodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) and Mayo matched a pair of goals from Jude Brown to keep things even at 3-3 before O'Connell's late tally at the end of the first half.

St. Mary's struck first to start the second half, but Dickinson would counter with three straight goals in a span of just over two minutes. O'Connell fed Phillips and then scored twice, the second coming on an extra-man opportunity with an assist from Mayo.

That put the Red Devils up, 7-4, with just under 10 minutes to play in the third quarter. The Seahawks answered with three straight goals to send the game into the final period, tied 7-7.

The Red Devils erupted for five goals to start the fourth, stretching the led to 12-7. O'Connell and Mayo each recorded a goal and assist while senior John Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) tallied one of each as well.

The Seahawks would add three more down the stretch with O'Connell breaking up that run with an assist to Phillips for the final of 13-10.

Mayo, O'Connell and Phillips each finished with four goals on the afternoon. O'Connell had a monster start, adding four assists as well. Senior Bobby Hartwick (Brookeville, Md./Georgetown Prep) was solid on face-offs, winning 19-of-26 and controlling 16 ground balls.

Nate Usich (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) picked up five GBs and cause three turnovers while Bobby Barroll (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) forced a pair of turnovers and had two GBs. Declan Wasp (Port Washington, N.Y./Chaminade) added three GBs.

Junior goaltender Cole Pellicano (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) finished with 14 saves as the Devils doubled-up the Seahawks in shots 61-29.

The Red Devils start the season 1-0. They travel to Montclair State next Saturday for a 3:00 pm start.
