Red Devils Strong Start Sweeps Albright in Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

By Austin Seabolt

(Aston, Pa.) - The Dickinson baseball team opened their 2019 season today by sweeping a doubleheader against Albright College at Maple Zone Sports Institute in Aston, Pa. They won game one 12-2 and game two 15-4, only playing seven innings in both games.

The Red Devils jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first two innings in game one. Junior Max Matilsky (Bernardsville, N.J./Morristown Beard), who missed all of last season due to injury after being named First-team All-Conference in 2017, got things started in the top of the first, hitting a two-run home run after an Alex Jacobson (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) single.

Dickinson would pick it right back up in the top of the second, as sophomore Chris Delsandro (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) drove in classmate Joey Volpe (Wall, N.J./St. Rose) before senior Ben Carter (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) hit a home run of his own to drive in Max Brown (Annapolis, Md./The McDonogh School).

Sophomore Alex Cohen (Newtown Square, Pa./Penn Charter) finished off the scoring in the second inning with an RBI single to score Alex Jacobson (Wilton, Conn./Wilton).

The Red Devils would strike again in the third with another RBI by Delsandro, who drove in junior Brian Reilly (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro), who started the inning with a walk. Reilly, Volpe, and Brown would then have back-to-back-to-back singles in the fourth, plating another three runs. They would finish the scoring in the seventh, as sophomore Brendan Pell (Delran, N.J./Penn Charter) earned a bases loaded walk and Reilly would follow it up would an RBI fielder's choice.

Junior Ethan Collins (Elmer, N.J./Arthur P. Schalick) earned the win for the Red Devils, going 5.0 innings, striking out four, and walking only one, before giving the ball to sophomore Teddy Reddington (Reston, Va./Flint School), who got through the last two innings without allowing a run.

Cohen would open the scoring in game two for Dickinson in the bottom of the first, driving in Carter. The Devils would then tack on two more in the second after a single from Brown drove in Volpe and Delsandro would follow with a single to drive in Brown.

After being held in check for a few innings, the Red Devils would explode for 12 runs on 10 hits in the fifth, putting the game away. Jacobson and Brown would both triple in the inning, along with doubles from Cohen and Matilsky. The biggest shot in the inning, however, would come off the bat of Reilly in the form of a three-run homerun. All in all, Dickinson would send 16 hitters to the plate in the inning, with Jacobson, Pell, and Reilly all having multiple hits.

Junior Tommy Koide (Morristown, N.J./West Morris Mendham) went 6.0 innings for Dickinson, striking out seven and only giving up five hits to earn the win. Classmate Marcus Thompson (Foothill Ranch, Calif./Trabuco Hills) finished the game off by throwing the seventh, striking out two.

The Red Devils will look to continue their unbeaten start on Saturday, March 2nd, with a home doubleheader against Juniata at MacPahail Field.
