Red Devils Rally Past Shoremen in CC Opener

Box Score

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The #10-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team overcame a tough first quarter to overtake visiting Washington College to claim the Centennial Conference opener, 19-14, on Saturday afternoon.

The Shoremen jumped out to a 2-0 lead before senior John Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) slipped one past the goaltender and then fed classmate Jack O'Connell (Sands Point, N.Y./Westminster) to knot the game at the 4:42 mark.

Casey Grieves answered with a natural hat-trick and added another in a 5-0 run that put the Shoremen in front, 7-2, at the end of the first quarter.

The Red Devils flipped the script, scoring eight straight to lead, 10-8, at halftime. Brodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) led the charge, scoring three goals and handing out a pair of assists during the run.

Long pole Teddy Macfarlane (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) made a great defensive play and finished with the first collegiate goal of his career as well.

The Red Devils scored three straight to start the second half. O'Connell finished on a great dish from long pole defender Jack Doran (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford School) to start things off before Nick Goles (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) fed Joel Mayo (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Berkshire) on back-to-back goals to put Dickinson up, 13-8, with just over 12 minutes to play in the quarter.

Washington looked to rally with three straight goals, cutting the margin to just a pair. O'Connell made a nice dodge to score and break up the run before the Shoremen capitalized with an extra-man goal to make the score 14-12, at the 4:03 mark.

Goles closed out the third with an unassisted goal and scored again to start the fourth. Max Menkes (Potomac, Md./Bullis) finished an assist from O'Connell for his second goal of the game, putting Dickinson up, 17-12, with 11:49 remaining.

O'Connell added a pair to trade goals with Washington for the final if 19-14. He finished with six goals and two assists to pace the Red Devil attack. Goles dished out four assists to go with a hat-trick while Phillips netted three goals and handed out two assists.

Macfarlane had a great game all around, adding seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. Nate Usich (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) was dominant with the long pole as well, picking up a 11 GBs and forcing a pair of turnovers. Austin Hurdle (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) went 15-for-30 on face-offs and tallied six GBs.

Junior Cole Pellicano (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) turned away some big shots, finishing with 12 saves on the afternoon.

The Red Devils improve to 6-2 overall and move to 1-0 in the Centennial Conference. They are on the road on Wednesday, traveling to McDaniel College for a 7:00 pm start.
