Men's Lacrosse Holds Off Bears 11-8

(Collegeville, Pa.) – The #15-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team had a strong start in the regular season finale at #13-Ursinus College, posting an 11-8 win to earn the #3-seed in the Centennial Conference playoffs.

Joel Mayo (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Berkshire) put the Red Devils in the board first, finishing an assist from Tucker Booth (Timonium, Md./Boys' Latin) at the midpoint of the first quarter before the Bears countered with a pair to lead, 2-1.

Senior Bobby Hartwick (Brookeville, Md./Georgetown Prep) won the next face-off and immediately found classmate Brodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) to quickly pull the Devils even.

The Red Devils tacked on a pair of goals in the final 1:10 as Jack O'Connell (Sands Point, N.Y./Westminster) found John Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) and Alex Hosker (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) scored with just 17 seconds on the clock.

Dickinson gained some separation in the second quarter, outscoring the Bears 4-0 to stretch the lead to 8-2 at halftime.

O'Connell scored on an extra-man opportunity to start the run and Lockwood followed up with an unassisted goal. O'Connell followed up with an assist from long pole midfielder Nate Usich (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) and Phillips closed out the quarter with a nice feed from Matt Donnelly (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional).

The Red Devils stretched the lead to 10-2 as Nick Goles (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) and Mayo found the net to open the third.

The Bears scored on an extra-man opportunity to break up the run before O'Connell tallied a late goal with just under two minutes to play in the quarter.

Ben Minardi scored back-to-back goals to trigger a rally by the Bears as they scored five goals in the final quarter to cut the final margin to 11-8.

O'Connell led the attack with three goals and one assist while Phillips, Lockwood and Mayo each scored twice on the day.

Hartwick won 15-of-23 face-offs and controlled 10 ground balls. Usich forced five turnovers and picked up four GBs on the day. Goles and Lockwood each tallied four GBs as well.

Junior goaltender Cole Pellicano (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) finished with 12 saves in the nets.

The Red Devils improve to 11-5 overall and 5-3 in the Centennial Conference. They will travel to #2-Gettysburg for the conference semifinals on Wednesday.
