Garnet Takes Two But Devils Still Alive in CC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team suffered a pair of losses to Swarthmore College on the final Saturday of the regular season. The Red Devils dropped the opener, 16-4 and suffered a 6-0 setback in the nightcap. The Garnet may have spoiled Senior Day but the Red Devils playoff hopes remain alive with a game at Muhlenberg scheduled for Sunday in Allentown.

The Red Devils had a solid start in the opener, but the Garnet would finish strong to take game one.

Swarthmore scored twice in the third and added a lone run in the fourth to jump out to a 3-0 lead. The Red Devils capitalized on a pair of walks to set the stage for RBI singles from Brian Reilly (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro) and Joey Volpe (Wall, N.J./St. Rose) to plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Dickinson overtook the Garnet in the sixth as Max Matilsky (Bernardsville, N.J./Morristown-Beard) and Alex Cohen (Newtown Square, Pa./Penn Charter) recorded back-to-back singles and Reilly stepped in to score both with another big single.

Swarthmore tied the game in the top of the seventh and had a big eighth, scoring four more to lead to 8-2. They continued to add the offense in the ninth, pushing across eight more for the final.

Reilly led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI.

The Garnet had a quick start in game two, scoring two runs in the top of the first and adding another in the second. A two-out walk and a pair of Red Devil errors led to a pair of runs in the third.

Swarthmore tallied another lone run in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 6-0 to close out the scoring.

Cohen had another strong outing, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Matilsky doubled for the Devils' only other hit as three Swarthmore pitchers combined to surrender just four hits.

The Red Devils slip to 22-14 overall and 9-8 in the Centennial Conference. There are in a must-win situation to keep their playoff hopes alive when they travel to Muhlenberg College on Sunday at 12:00 pm.
