Koide Sets Save Mark as Devils Move to 4-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team moved to the top of the standings in the Centennial Conference, sweeping a double-header from Haverford College on Saturday at MacPhail Field. The Red Devils held on for a 3-2 win in the opener and claimed the nightcap, 4-3, in extra innings.

Junior Tommy Koide (Morristown, N.J./West Morris Mendham) broke the school record with his sixth save of the season, overtaking Reid Collins mark from 2017. Koide becomes the second pitcher under pitching coach Ryan Kramer's '14 tenure to set the mark.

Koide also came on in relief in game two and earned the win in the 10th inning.

Ben Carter (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) started off game two with a single in the bottom of the first and came in to score on an RBI single from Alex Cohen (Newtown Square, Pa./Penn Charter).

Joey Volpe (Wall, N.J./St. Rose) was hit by a pitch and stole second to set up and RBI single for Brian Reilly (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro) to put the Devils up, 2-0, in the second.

Max Brown (Annapolis, Md.) tallied a stolen base and a run scored in the fifth as he came in on a wild pitch to give the Red Devils what would become a much-need insurance run.

Haverford capitalized on an error to produce a run in the sixth inning and cut the deficit to a run in the ninth on another error before Koide closed out the game for the 3-2 win.

Carter led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 in the opener. Teddy Reddington (Reston, Va./Flint Hill) went 7.1 innings to earn the win, scattering four hits.

Haverford came out swinging in game two, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. The Red Devils scored lone runs in the third and fourth and pulled in front with one in the seventh.

Alex Jacobson (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) singled and came around on a double from Cohen in the third. Reilly doubled in the fourth and scored on a single from sophomore catcher Chris Delsandro (Chatham, N.J./Chatham).

Carter singled in the seventh and used a wild pitch and an error to move to third. He put Dickinson on top, scoring on a sacrifice fly from Jacobson.

Harrison Burns singled, stole second and tied the game on an RBI from Owen Plambeck in the top of the eighth.

Neither team to plate the game-winner in the ninth and the game went into extra innings.

The Red Devils loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th after lead-off hitter Max Matilsky (Bernardsville, N.J./Morristown-Beard) was hit by a pitch.

Pat Harrington (Long Valley, N.J./Delbarton) had a pinch-hit single and Reilly reached on an error, moving Matilsky to third. Brown was dealt four straight balls to force in the run with an RBI walk as Dickinson improved to 4-1 in the conference.

Carter went 2-for-4 in game two as well while Cohen finished 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

Sophomore Jake Geddes (Darien, Conn./Darien) had a strong start, going seven innings and striking out four in six-hit effort. Classmate Connor Langan (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) came on in relief before Koide closed out the final two innings for the win.

The Red Devils improve to 17-5 overall and 4-1 in the conference. They were supposed travel to Franklin & Marshall on Sunday, but that game has been postponed to Monday afternoon.
