Baseball Splits With Johns Hopkins to Move to 3-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team split a Centennial Conference double-header with visiting Johns Hopkins University on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays claimed the opener, 9-5, before the Red Devils put together a late rally to win the nightcap, 3-1.

Hopkins pushed a run across in the first inning of game one and had the bases loaded, but first-year Matt Spind (Clarksville, Md./McDonogh) worked his way out of the inning.

The Red Devils countered with one in the second as Brendan Pell (Delran, N.J./Penn Charter) single, stole second and came in on a triple off the bat of Lukas Atsalis (West Hyannis Port, Mass./Berkshire).

The Blue Jays added two in the third and had a big sixth inning, scoring six runs to stretch the lead to 9-1. Dickinson answered with another lone run in the sixth with Atsalis adding a single and later coming across on a sacrifice fly from Tyler Scaff (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park).

The Red Devils continued to rally, adding three more in the seventh. They loaded the bases to set up an RBI walk for Mark Place (Harford, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) and Scaff hit a hard shot to third, reaching on an error as two more runs came across.

Hopkins would hold on from there to improve to 1-2 on the season.

Pell led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Atsalis finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

In game two, Hopkins struck early again, scoring their lone run in the first inning. Both pitchers were solid in the early going, but the Red Devils had hot bats in the sixth.

Tom Gannaway (Westfield, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) led-off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Andrew Mazzone (Belmont, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover). Pell dropped a long bomb just inside the center field fence to score Gannaway and then came in to score off triple from Derek Smith (New Hope, Pa./New Hope Solebury) to give Dickinson a 3-1 advantage.

Beau Dana (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) came on in relief to earn his second save of the season, holding the Blue Jays hitless over the final three innings. First-year Ethan Hamilton (Wyndmoor, Pa./Springfield Twp.) earned the win, recording seven strikeouts while allowing just three hits in a six-inning effort.

First-year Kenny Tagliareni (Hopewell Valley, N.J./Hopewell Valley) went 2-for-3 in game two while Gannaway finished 2-for-4.

The Red Devils improve to 3-1 overall and 3-1 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Gettysburg College next Saturday for a 12:00 pm double-header.
