Red Devils Claim Opener, Split With Mules

(CARLISLE, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team split a Centennial Conference double-header with Muhlenberg College on Saturday at MacPhail Field. The Red Devils claimed the opener 7-2 but dropped a 6-5 heartbreaker in 11-innings in the nightcap.

Christian Kim (Rivervale, N.J./Pascack Hills) drew a bases loaded walk to put the Red Devils on the board in the fourth inning and Chris Delsandro (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) drove in another to put Dickinson on top, 2-0.

Alex Cohen (Newtown Square, Pa./Penn Charter) reached on an error and scored on a double from Andrew Mazzone (Belmont, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover) to stretch the lead to 3-0 in the fifth.

Muhlenberg scored twice in the seventh to cut the deficit to one. The Red Devils quickly countered with three in the bottom of the inning. Cohen drove in two runs with a double and Mazzone doubled to score Cohen for the second time in the game.

Lukas Atsalis (West Hyannis Port, Mass./Berkshire School) added an insurance run with an RBI double in the eighth for the final of 7-2.

Mazzone finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored while Cohen tallied two RBI and two runs scored. Jake Geddes (Darien, Conn./Darien) picked up the win, going four innings in the start.

The Red Devils held a 5-0 lead, heading into the eighth inning of game two before the Mules rallied to tie and then slipped in front in the 11th to claim the nightcap.

Dickinson took a 3-0 lead in the third, trigged by a solo homerun from Atsalis. Cohen tripled to score Kenny Tagliareni (Hopewell Valley, N.J./Hopewell Valley) and then came home on a wild pitch.

Cohen recorded another RBI, scoring Tom Gannaway (Westfield, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) in the bottom of the fifth. Kim drove in Brendan Pell (Delran, N.J./Penn Charter) with a sacrifice fly for a 5-0 lead in the sixth.

Muhlenberg rallied with five runs on three hits in the top of the eighth to tie the game and force extra innings. Both teams held until the 11th when Trevor Virno hit a solo homerun to left field that would give the Mules the 6-5 decision.

Cohen went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the nightcap while Pell finished 2-for-4.

The Red Devils move to 5-3 on the season. They are home again on Saturday, hosting a double-header with Ursinus College at 12:00 pm.
