Devils Pick Up Sweep of Bowdoin in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Dickinson baseball team began their busy spring break trip in Florida with an 8-5 extra-inning win in game one, before picking up another hard fought 10-9 victory in game two against the Bowdoin College Polar Bears on Sunday afternoon at the Lake Myrtle Park Complex.

Game One - Devils 8, Polar Bears 5 (F/11)

W - Beau Dana (1-0) | L - Jack Mullen (1-1)

Inside the Game

The first three batters of the game reached against Red Devils starter Ethan Hamilton thanks to a hit batter and two singles. That filled the bags for Gabe Peckler who cleared the bases for an early 3-0 lead. Hamilton then worked out of further issues with a strikeout and a fly out.

Dickinson finally got on the board in the home-half of the third as Lukas Atsalis provided a one-out double. Then, after Cole Hare reached on an error the Red and White had men on the corners with two away for Luke Jackson. He doubled off of Jack Mullen to drive in one to make it 3-1. The next batter was Colin Jones who smacked a single to plate Hare. No more damage would come as Tom Gannaway flew out to right to retire the side.

Bowdoin added a run in the fourth without recording a hit as Hamilton hit Bobby Pearl and walked Ben McKenzie before two consecutive miscues in the field led to Pearl crossing the plate for the 4-2 edge. Hamilton settled down to get the next two batters to end the inning.

After a quiet top of the fifth, the Red Devils went to work in the bottom half of the frame with Andrew Mazzone starting it off with a single. However, the Hare and Jackson were set down via a strikeout and groundout to bring up Jones with two away. A Polar Bear error allowed Mazzone to hustle home making it 4-3 through five.

Both teams found the board in the sixth with Bowdoin using a pair of two-out hits to plate one, before the Red and White grabbed two with Atsalis driving in both Kenny Tagliareni and Ryan Thompson to draw even at 5-5 after six.

Dickinson tried to put the game away in the ninth by loading the bases with one out for Jones. However, he lined out to left and Gannaway popped up to first to force extra innings.

Dana set down the Bowdoin hitters in order in the top of the 11th to give DC a chance in the home half. That would be all the opening the Devils would need as Atsalis and Mazzone each drew a free pass before Hare blasted a three-run walk-off homer.

Game Two - Devils 10, Bowdoin 9 (F/7)

W - Brian Riley (2-0) | L - Jason Bogdanos (1-1) | S - Matt Spind (1)

Inside the Game

Dickinson took command early against Jason Bogdanos as Tagliareni, Mazzone, and Hare all reached with one away, before Jackson sent one out of the yard to take an early 4-0 lead. A strikeout of Kaden Sigmon tried to stop the rally, but Gannaway walked and scored after a Bowdoin mistake.

The Bears got two back in the bottom of the second off Riley as Nick Merrill homered and Robbie Sarmanian came home on a Devils fielding miscue to cut it down to 5-2 after two.

In the fourth, both teams would add on to the scoreboard with a Gannaway triple and a walk to Chase Weller putting men on the corners with no one out. Nathan Bowman bounced into a fielder's choice to plate one more for the 6-2 edge. However, a two-run blast from Sarmanian along with a rbi triple by Stephen Simoes pulled the Bears to within 6-5 through four.

The Red and White answered right back during the top of the fifth as a double by Mazzone and a walk to Hare put two men on with one out. Gannaway then stepped up to face reliever Michael Weber. He would greet the new pitcher rather rudely as he blasted a three-run shot to extend the DC advantage to 9-5 heading to the home-half of the fifth. Bowdoin continued to hang around by scoring three runs on just one hit aided by three Devils errors in the inning.

Tagliareni worked a leadoff walk in the sixth and was driven in three batters later when Jackson ripped a single to make it 10-8.

Dickinson wrapped up the sweep in the seventh as Matt Spind got a strikeout of Simoes to end the game after a home run by Merrill set the margin at 10-9.

On Deck

Dickinson (4-4) gets right back at tomorrow afternoon as they battle the Ithaca Bombers at 4:30 p.m. in Auburndale.
