Devils Win Streak Stopped at Five by Pioneers

Box Score

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Dickinson baseball team had their win streak snapped at five games on Tuesday afternoon as the Utica College Pioneers broke open a 6-6 game in the last of the fourth en route to a 19-9 win at Lake Myrtle Park.

Both starting pitchers Tyler Catalfamo and Koll Peichel had uneventful first innings allowing just one base runner each, but not letting either cross the plate.

The scoring began in the second with Dickinson taking the early lead as Tom Gannaway reached on a fielder's choice with two down before Chase Weller singled to drive him in. However, hits by Ryan Cardone and Zac Cronk during the home-half of the frame coupled with two DC miscues allowed three men to come in for the 3-1 lead after two.

Dickinson responded immediately in the third putting two on with no one out for Andrew Mazzone. He drove home both Kenny Tagliareni and Lukas Atsalis with a single to tie the score. A walk to Cole Hare and a groundout by Luke Jackson kept the train moving with two men on for Kaden Sigmon. He gave DC the lead back with a ball to deep right field that was tracked down but scored both runners for the 5-3 edge. Unfortunately, doubles from Joe Battista and Jason Story along with a single for Cardone knotted the score at five, before a sac fly off the bat of Shamariah McCullough gave UC a 6-5 lead.

Once again the Devils answered back with Weller knocking a ball over the fence to start the fourth. A two-out single from Atsalis gave the Red and White an opportunity to add-on, but he was caught trying to swipe second base. The Pioneers reclaimed the lead and added on during their at-bat in the fourth with Noah Barber picking up a two-run single against Peichel, while Cardone ripped a two-run hit off of reliever Nathan Weisoly to push the advantage to 10-6.

Utica extended the margin to 14-6 after five thanks to a bases-loaded hit by pitch to Story, sacrifice fly for Cardone, and RBI knocks from McCullough and Cronk.

Each team had a new pitcher take over on the hill in the sixth inning with Christian Cicchetti and Grayson Walker both allowing no damage to hold the score where it was.

The seventh frame brought some life to the DC offense as pinch-hitter Matt Torres began things with a solo shot. Then, after Atsalis flew out to center Mazzone was hit by the pitch leading to a two-run pinch-hit home run for Desmond Watkins cutting the deficit to 14-9. Sigmon doubled with two away to keep the rally going, but Alex Bouchard flew out to center retiring the side.

The Pioneers would wrap up the game in the home-half by plating five more runs with the big knock coming from Joe Crossley who plated the final three runs with a bases-clearing triple to set the final score of 19-9.

W - Tyler Catalfamo (1-0) | L - Koll Peichel (0-2)
