No. 8 Devils Keep on Rolling as Huge Third Downs Seahawks

Box Score

SPARKS, Md. - The eighth-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team broke open an 8-6 halftime lead with an eight-goal third quarter to topple a strong St. Mary's College of Maryland Seahawks team by a score of 19-10 in a non-conference contest that was played at Tierney Field at USA Lacrosse Headquarters.

It took Dickinson two minutes to record their first of 68 shots on the afternoon as Owen Porter was turned aside by St. Mary's keeper Kyrle Preis. Johnny McGrain would test Chris Brandau two minutes later, but the DC netminder was up to the task. That led to the opening goal of the contest when James Isaacson stuck one into the cage. Despite the Red Devils firing five of the next seven shots they would not beat Preis, however, the Seahawks solved Brandau on their two chances to take a 2-1 edge. Dickinson racked up nine more shots over the final seven minutes of the quarter with Sam Campbell, Sascha Gannon, and John McKee all missing the mark, while Matt Thurston and Isaacson notched goals to give DC a 3-2 lead through 15-minutes.

The Red and White kept up the pressure recording the first four shots of the second with Porter burying his first of five on the day. The Hawks answered two minutes later through Abe Hubbard leaving the Devils on top 4-3. Eight more DC attempts yielded no results as Preis made two saves. Instead, it would be St. Mary's that cashed in with Hubbard scoring twice to bring them in front 5-4. However, their lead did not last long as just seven seconds later Skyler Schluter hit the back of the net off a Thurston feed. Dickinson then got on a nice run scoring three goals in about a 50-second span thanks to Tucker Booth, Cooper Chamberlain, and Porter sending the Devils to an 8-5 advantage with 3:30 left. Aiden Doyle cut into the lead by one heading to the half.

It was all Dickinson during the third as the Red and White tallied five straight goals in the opening six-plus minutes of the third courtesy of Will Farrell (2), Campbell (2), and Isaacson to extend the margin to 13-6 with 8:08 to go. St. Mary's tried to stem the tide by getting goals from Jude Brown and Quinnten Hatfield, while DC put up one more through Porter making it 14-8 at the 11:11 mark. Five more Dickinson shots led to two with Thurston finishing off a nice dish from Ethan Gess and Porter burying a pass from Gannon to double-up the Hawks after three 16-8.

The "Brandau Show" took over to start the fourth as he made four saves in the first five minutes of the period allowing the Devils to ride the momentum to their 17th marker of the day coming from Porter. Off the ensuing faceoff win for Michael Crawford Thurston ripped a shot wide, before Gannon tickled the twine off the assist from Schluter. St. Mary's netted two more prior to the end of the game, while Carter Wilmot scored his first of the campaign to cap the scoring at 19-10. Patrick Scarborough played the final 4:35 between the pipes for DC allowing no goals and making one save.
