#9 Devils Survive Late Push From Bears to Remain Unbeaten

Box Score

CARLISLE, Pa. - The ninth-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team outscored the visiting Ursinus College Bears 4-0 in the third to build up a 12-6 cushion and stave off a furious late-game rally to remain unbeaten with a 14-11 Centennial Conference win at Biddle Field on Saturday afternoon.

Ursinus recorded the first two shots of the game and dented the board first when Stephen Schoenborn beat Devils keeper Chris Brandau. However, Dickinson had the immediate answer as Sam Campbell ripped the back of the net behind Jonathan Singer to tie the score a minute later. The fast start continued with Tyler Neal scoring on the very next shot on goal to reclaim the lead. Then, the Red and White seemed to wake up as they fired the next eight shots with Singer making three stops, before Sascha Gannon and Will Farrell each scored for the 3-2 lead with 5:58 to go. Both sides would trade goals to end the period with Schoenborn and Campbell tallying for their respective sides.

Brandau was forced into a save off the opening draw of the second as he turned aside Brett Wilkinson. However, the Bears knotted the score at 4-4 with 1:32 off the clock thanks to Chris Porzelt, but then DC took the lead right back with Skyler Schluter picking up an unassisted marker a minute later. The goal-scoring dried up over the next seven minutes with Ethan Gess, Matt Thurston, Farrell, and Schluter all pulling shots wide of the cage. That allowed the Bears to capitalize through Tyler Falco to once again tie things up. Fortunately, for Dickinson, they scored three of the final four goals in the quarter with Campbell, Gess, and Thurston making it 8-6 at half.

Thurston made it 9-6 at the 31-second mark of the third. Then, after a save by Brandau on Neal DC went to work in the offensive half recording the following six shots as Griffin Moore and Gess missed the mark, while Tucker Booth along with Thurston fired the ball past Singer for the 11-6 advantage with 9:18 to go. Just over a minute later, Farrell capped off the scoring for the third with an unassisted rocket beyond the reach of the keeper as the Devils doubled up the Bears at 12-6 with three quarters in the books.

With two minutes gone in the fourth Schluter missed the target, but a dozen seconds later Thurston did not as the lead grew to 13-6. Ursinus then put up a wall in their defensive zone as they limited the Red and White to two shots and caused four turnovers over the next 8:16 while their offense went on the attack scoring five straight goals to close within 13-11 with 3:46 to play. However, Thurston buried his fifth of the afternoon with 53-seconds remaining to secure the 14-11 victory.
