LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Dickinson field hockey team wrapped up their two-game Virginia swing on Sunday afternoon with a visit to the University of Lynchburg. The Red and White fell behind early, but got a second quarter goal from
Sammi Moonay to draw even before the host Hornets found a winner in the third to grab a 2-1 non-conference win at Shellenberger Field.
Lynchburg had the early pressure on the Dickinson cage as a penalty corner just 32-seconds in led to a shot from Ryleigh Cameron that was saved by Devils keeper
Saige Stevens. However, Emily Yanes pounced on the loose ball and found Brittany Claybaugh for the goal. The Hornets had two more chances in the quarter, but neither tested Stevens. Dickinson on the other hand recorded two shots in the final minute with Moonay having her attempt cleared off the line by Aaryn Boatwright, before
Emma Snyder was turned away by Kayla Brady.
Both goalies were called upon inside the first three minutes of the second as Stevens stopped Aurora Balsamo, while
Maggie Carson was told no by Brady. The only other shot came right at the end of the quarter when
Abby Marthins played in a corner to Moonay who stepped into a shot and fired it beyond the stick of Brady to tie the score at 1-1 heading to the half.
Lynchburg asserted themselves in the third as they outshot the Red and White eight to zero forcing Stevens into two saves and scoring once through Madison Mark to give the home side a 2-1 advantage going to the fourth.
The Hornets had four shots within the opening ten minutes with Stevens tasked with making two more stops held the deficit at one. Dickinson was awarded two penalty corners inside the last three minutes resulting in shots from
Morgan Yandow-Harding and Carson. Unfortunately, both tries were blocked by the defense allowing the home side to escape with a 2-1 win.
