ALLENTOWN, Pa. - In a game that was scoreless for almost 50 minutes and only saw 11 total shots between the two sides. The Dickinson field hockey team suffered a hard fought 1-0 setback to the host Muhlenberg College Mules in the Centennial Conference opener on Friday night at Scotty Wood Stadium.
The opening six-plus minutes were played mostly in the midfield as it took until the 7:06 mark for either side to record a shot when
Abby Hill had her attempt blocked by the defense. Just over 30-seconds later Muhlenberg applied some pressure, but the offering by Erin Jackson rolled wide of
Saige Stevens in goal. With five minutes remaining in the period
Katie Marthins was unable to get her shot to Mules keeper Grace Leard as it was snuffed out by the D to wrap up the first.
The home side had the only two shots in the second with Mallory Holson getting blocked, while Stevens shut the door on Devon Eastlack to hold the score at 0-0 heading to the half.
Dickinson flipped the script in the third as the Red and White put the pressure on the Mules defense drawing two penalty corners and recording shots from
Sammi Moonay and
Morgan Yandow-Harding. However, none of them tested Leard.
Muhlenberg broke through at the 4:18 mark of the fourth when Katie Raab played in a penalty corner to Nicole Randazza who had her shot tipped home by Abba Diglio for the 1-0 edge. The Devils got their only two chances of the period five minutes later and six-seconds apart. First,
Becca Woods had her attempt blocked, while Moonay was unable to bother Leard off the
Abby Marthins corner allowing the Mules to leave with the win.
