HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Dickinson field hockey team went down 2-0 in the first half, but rallied back with two markers in the third and got an overtime winner from
Emma Snyder to pick up a 3-2 non-conference win over Juniata College at Knox Stadium on Sunday. The win marked the first one for the Red and White under first-year head coach
Jenn Hanks.
The Devils defense was under duress early as goalie
Saige Stevens had to make a pair of saves inside the opening two minutes turning aside Brooke Franke on both occasions. Five minutes later the Red and White flipped the momentum with
Abby Marthins,
Sammi Moonay, and
Becca Woods all firing at cage, but Brittney McMullen was up to the task. A pair of first-years then tried to solve the keeper as blasts by
Malena Malka Goldman and
Sophia Pereira each had shots knocked away. Unfortunately, for the visitors the Eagles recorded the final four chances of the period with Hannah Moore setting up Tess Ledeboer with no time left for the 1-0 edge.Â
Dickinson carried the play during the second quarter as they outshot the home side 8-1 over the 15-minute segment with offerings coming from
Morgan Yandow-Harding, K. Marthins, Moonay, Pereira, and Woods forcing McMullen into another four saves, but could not dent the cage. However, for the second straight period the Eagles netted a late goal with Ledeboer scoring her second for a 2-0 halftime lead.Â
The first six minutes of the third went by with neither side really able to put much of an offensive attack together as no shots were recorded. With 7:43 off the clock Woods had an attempt blocked which resulted in a penalty corner for DC. The insert would come from A. Marthins to Yandow-Harding at the top of the circle she found
Katie Marthins in the middle of the attacking area for a shot that beat McMullen. On the ensuing Devils trip into the attacking zone they tied the score off another corner with the Marthins sisters connecting again with Abby hitting Katie who stepped up and ripped one into the cage. After that tally there would not be another shot over the final five minutes as the game moved to the fourth.
Dickinson had the only three shots of the final frame as K. Marthins and Yandow-Harding were stopped by McMullen, while K. Marthins got one final look with 40 seconds left off a corner but it sailed wide sending the proceedings to overtime.
The Red and White seemed destined to score in the extra session as they had the only two shots of the period with Goldman sending one wide in the sixth minute, before Snyder slipped one by McMullen for the winner a minute later.
