BALTIMORE, Md. - The Dickinson field hockey team put together a strong defensive effort all night, but ultimately did not have enough to post an upset win over the third-ranked Johns Hopkins University as the Blue Jays picked up a 3-0 Centennial Conference win at Homewood Field.
The home side applied the pressure just over a minute in as a corner from Siena Urbanski that resulted in the first of 17 Hopkins shots on the night as Mikayla Schoff went wide of DC keeper
Taylor Schlein. She would however get busy halfway through the frame recording saves against Jenna Halpin, Grace Waldeck and Schoff to keep things scoreless into the final minute. That was when the Red and White worked themselves into the offensive half leading to
Sophia Pereira sending the first visiting shot away from Phoebe Williams to end the first.Â
The teams would play primarily in the midfield for the first seven minutes of the second, until Gen Mehra tested Schlein with 22:26 off the clock. That began a Blue Jays barrage the remainder of the period as they tallied five more shots forcing three more stops out of Schlein. Dickinson appeared to withstand the pressure and looked to head to the halftime break ready to regroup, but Schoff recovered a rebound off an offering by Waldeck and sent the ball into the cage for a 1-0 lead.
Hopkins came out of the break rolling again as a corner from Ava Balacek led to a shot from Waldeck and stop for Schlein. Unfortunately, for the Red and White a stroke was then awarded for the home side which led to Emily Amsden putting it away for a 2-0 advantage just two minutes in. The rest of the frame saw neither side able to put together any offensive threat as the match moved to the final 15 minutes at 2-0.Â
It took five minutes to see the first chance of the fourth when Balacek found Schoff off a corner who was once again turned aside by Schlein. Consecutive corners for the Devils during the 55th-minute gave the guests a chance to get back into the game, but new keeper Alexis Loder denied the attempt off the stick of
Maggie Carson. That stop by Loder seemed to wake the Jays back up as they recorded three more shots a minute later that saw one from Waldeck slip by the goalie to make it 3-0. Dickinson had one last chance to break the shutout in the final minute, but the offering from
Malena Malka Goldman off a corner by
Abby Marthins was blocked down by the backline to secure the final score.
