CARLISLE, Pa. - Senior
Ella Krenzer made her Senior Day quite memorable on Saturday afternoon as she notched the only goal of the match with 75:41 off the clock to send the Dickinson field hockey team to the Centennial Conference postseason with a 1-0 double overtime win over visiting Muhlenberg College in a "win and in" match at the Biddle Field Complex.
The first quarter would be mostly a feeling out process between the two teams as
Maggie Carson recorded the only chance over the first ten-plus minutes, but it was blocked down by the Mules defense. Later in the period Muhlenberg would mount a little bit of pressure earning a pair of corners that resulted in two attempts from Katie Raab that did not make their way to Devils keeper
Taylor Schlein as the first ended 0-0.Â
The Red and White were on the attack during the first two minutes of the second as two corners led to blasts by
Malena Malka Goldman,
Megan McClure and Carson (2) forcing the first two stops of the day for Mules keeper Maddie Schwartz. In the 18th-minute the Devils defense was tested as the visitors recorded four corners within a 60-second span ending with just one shot from Erin Jackson that was snuffed out by the defense. After Raab had another chance blocked, the Devils seemed determined to head into the break up a goal. However, two shots for
Morgan Yandow-Harding and one by Malka Goldman were denied by Schwartz keeping it 0-0 at halftime.Â
Three minutes into the third Dickinson would go a player down when
Nicole Uebele was assessed a green card. Fortunately for the home side the defense was lockdown as they did not allow a shot over the two-minute stretch. It would take until the 42nd minute to see the first shot of the quarter when a corner played in from
Sophia Pereira resulted in two chances from Yandow-Harding one of which was saved by Schwartz, while the other was blocked. Pereira and Uebele each added one more shot tasking Schwartz with adding another stop to her ledger to move the match to the fourth still scoreless.Â
The teams traded chances two minutes into the period with Raab sending one wide of cage, while
Abby Marthins had her attempt beaten away by Schwartz. In the 56th, Muhlenberg would record their final shot of regulation when Abba Diglio missed wide. Dickinson got two more looks at goal inside the final two minutes as a Marthins corner resulted in offerings from McClure and Yandow-Harding that were both blocked by the Mules defense to send things to overtime.
Dickinson withstood two early visiting corners without allowing a shot, which allowed for the Devils to get into the attacking end and use five corners to tally blasts by Carson, Malka Goldman, Marthins, McClure and Yandow-Harding forcing just one save from Schwartz leading to a second overtime period. In the second ten-minute segment Dickinson had to really bear down early as a green card given to McClure put DC a player-down for two minutes. After not allowing a shot during their first player-down chance of the game the home side gave up a chance to Jackson, but Schlein was there to answer. Once Dickinson killed off the card the Devils rode the momentum to the eventual game-winner as McClure fed a pass to Krenzer in the circle who then pushed a shot past Schwartz for the 1-0 win and the postseason berth.
