CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's soccer team held an 18-6 shot advantage (8-3 on target) and carried the play for most of the night against the visiting Susquehanna University, but the River Hawks made their first shot of the night matter the most as they claimed a 1-0 non-conference win at Miller Memorial Field.
With just 2:16 off the clock the visitors took a 1-0 edge as a corner played in from the right-side found the head of Cierra Getz who nodded it off the crossbar above DC keeper
Elizabeth Allen, before Marley Sprenkel muscled it over the line. Dickinson tried to respond right away, but
Bridget Merkel was shutdown by Kayleigh Saboja two minutes later. The Devils continued to be on the front-foot as
Katie Vassilakos (2) and Merkel fired away towards Saboja forcing her into one stop as the match just hit the ten minute mark. Allen was then called upon in the 21st when she shutdown Emily Wertz to keep the score where it was. The rest of the half the pitch was tilted in favor of the Red and White, unfortunately,
Ava Burgess,
Lila Brown and
Ava Prisco were not able to solve Saboja to send things to the break still at 1-0.
Dickinson spent the first 15 minutes of the second period inside the River Hawks defensive third recording shots from
Emma Cooney,
Sophia Elguera,
Maddie St. Amand, Brown and Prisco forcing two more saves out of Saboja. The Devils continued to just pepper the visitors net with
Melina Jagiello, Brown and Merkel testing the keeper over the following ten minutes, while at the other end Wertz was denied by new keeper
Emma Burrows at the 75:36 on the Hawks first chance of the period. In the 88th-minute the Red and White appeared to tie the match as a long shot by Brown rang the crossbar, it then fell down on the line and was jabbed home by
Allie Charnas. However, the assistant referee judged the play to be offsides wiping out the equalizer and allowing Susquehanna to finish off the win.
