AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Dickinson baseball team finished off a dominant 8-0 spring break trip in Florida by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader against Westminster College (Pa.) on Friday morning. The two wins pushed the Devils unbeaten streak to 11.
Game One - DEVILS 3, Titans 1 (F/7)
Pitching Decision
W -
Koll Peichel (2-1) | L - Kolton Banfi (0-2) | S -
Joey Sangiuolo (1)
Inside the Game
Peichel started off the game by walking Matthew Randza and then gave up a knock to Logan Murgenovich putting two on for Brandon Cooper. He made it 1-0 with a knock to right, before Peichel settled in and retired the next three (two via strikeout). Dickinson was unable to respond against Banfi in the home-half going down one-two-three. Each team appeared to mount a rally in the third as the Titans loaded the bags with one gone, but Peichel got a popup and strikeout to set down the side. The Red and White got a single by
Dylan Posencheg and a two-bagger from
Kenny Tagliareni to have two in scoring position with one out. Unfortunately,
Derek Smith and
Christian Kim each struck out swinging to stall the threat. A walk and two groundouts had a Devil on third during the last of the fourth, but a K by
Johnny Bruno allowed for no damage.
After a quiet top of the fifth, DC found their way onto the scoreboard as with one gone Posencheg earned a free pass, followed by a single for Tagliareni through the right-side. That set the stage for Kim who blasted the Banfi offering over the left-field wall to take a 3-1 edge with five in the books.
Luke Nemeth was on the hill to begin the sixth, but ran into some trouble with a pair of singles putting men on the corner for Braeden Campbell. He did not have the pleasure of facing Nemeth as Sangiuolo replaced him on the bump and recorded consecutive strikeouts to end the frame. Sangiuolo then ended the game in the seventh with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout.
Game Two - DEVILS 19, Titans 3 (F/7)
Pitching Decision
W -
Austin Buzza (3-1) | L - Wyatt Walker (0-1)
Inside the Game
Dickinson had a two-out explosion in the first as walks to
Kaden Sigmon, Kim and
Ryan Thompson along with a hit batter forced in one. The man up was
Chase Weller and he too was hit by a pitch to drive in the second run. An error with
Josh Markley at the dish scored another, before a bases-loaded walk to
Will Ferris extended it to 4-0 through just the top of the first. After a "three up, three down" home-half the Red and White made it 5-0 in the second as a fielder's choice and stolen base from Sigmon set the stage for an RBI knock up the middle by Kim. The Titans found two during the bottom part of the frame as they recorded four singles, a walk and fielder's choice against Buzza. He then got a strikeout and flyout to wrap up the rally at 5-2.
The Red and White continued to pile on in the third as the first six batters were either walked or hit by a pitch to force home three more and stretching it out to 8-0 still the bags full of Devils with no outs for Sigmon. He cleared the bags by smashing a double into left-center (11-0). After a Kim single put men on the corners, Thompson delivered a sacrifice fly pushing the margin to double-digits 12-2 through two-and-a-half. Buzza was not able to provide the shutdown inning in the bottom-half giving up a leadoff blast to Cooper.
Dickinson continued to wear pitches as two more men were hit by a pitch to kickoff the fourth, while Ferris worked a walk to load the bases with one gone.
Colin Jones then stepped in to hit for Kim and ripped a two-run double to right driving in two more.
Nathan Weisoly took over on the mound for Buzza in the bottom-half and allowed the bags to fill with just one out, but got a flyout and grounder to retire the side.
Luke Nemeth became the third Devils pitcher when he assumed the mound in the fifth and issued two walks, but was able to pitch around them keeping the score at 14-3 to the sixth. With one down
Conor Hawkins singled and then
George Thorp was plunked leading to a three-run bomb off the stick of Weller. Hits from Markley, Ferris and
Desmond Watkins filled the pillows again for Sodl. He was safe on a fielder's choice to drive home one more, before
Campbell Brusman was retired. Three consecutive knocks in the final frame resulted in the 19th run coming across for the Devils. The pitching tandem of
Zach Wernick and
Evan Connery allowed no his over the final two frames to secure the 19-3 victory.
