CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson baseball got two RBIs each from
Christian Kim,
Ryan Thompson and
Matt Torres to help secure their tenth straight win and run their unbeaten run to a dozen with a convincing 11-4 non-conference victory over the visiting Juniata College Eagles at MacPhail Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Pitching Decision
W -
Charlie Bien (1-0) | L - Robbie Pliszka (0-2)
Red Devils starter
Charlie Bien making his first-ever collegiate start began things strong by recording two strikeouts and a flyout for a "three up, three down" top of the first. Dickinson wasted no time getting to Eagles starter Robbie Pliszka as
Kenny Tagliareni was hit by a pitch, before an error let
Kaden Sigmon get on as well and a walk handed out to Kim filled the bags with one down. After a strikeout of
Derek Smith, the Red and White got on the board when a fielder's choice let Torres reach. However, during that play the second Eagles error of the frame resulted in two men coming home. The next hitter was Thompson who notched his first RBI of the game with a knock to left field scoring Kim.
Chase Weller then flew out to left for the final out. Another clean inning by Bien led to DC grabbing two more in the last of the second when a single for
Johnny Bruno and an error to let
Dylan Posencheg reach put two on base. The next hitter was Tagliareni who attempted to move the runners 90-feet, but his bunt was too close to the pitcher allowing him to throw to third and retire Bruno. A fielder's choice for Sigmon forced out the man at second, but let Posencheg show off his wheels and come home to score to make it 4-0 through two.
Both teams found the scoreboard in the third as two singles, a walk and a double-play resulted in Eagles on the corners with two gone for Evan Mock. He would hit a grounder out to Sigmon appearing to setup the final out, but the throw went a little wide letting one in. The next man would be Joey Woodrow and he produced an RBI single to center cutting it down in half to 4-2. Juniata sent a new man to the hill in the last of the inning as Ethan Pfeffer immediately surrendered a triple to right for Smith, which was followed by a base knock from Torres. Back-to-back wild pitches advanced the runner to third setting things up for Thompson who smacked one back up the box to plate Torres extending it to 6-2 after three.
As the game shifted to the fifth both sides would dip into the bullpen as
Evan Connery took over for Bien and would let up a walk, stolen base and a wild pitch to move the man to third with two away. However, he settled in and got Joey Woodrow to strikeout for the last out. Nic Flaherty then replaced Pfeffer in the bottom-half and hit Smith, followed by walking Torres. Unfortunately, a sac bunt, strikeout and popout prevented DC from adding on. However, the Red and White did get two during the sixth when with one out Tagliareni was hit by a pitch, before coming around to score on a three-bagger to deep right-center for Sigmon. Then, with Kim at the dish Flaherty spiked a ball in the dirt letting Sigmon sprint home from third to make it 8-2 with six in the books. New Dickinson pitcher
Peyton Fox was unable to provide the shutdown inning as he gave up a single to Michael Warren, prior to swiping second and scoring on a sac fly to center with one down. Fox let the next two men reach, before Woodrow flew out to retire the side. The Devils got the run back plus two in the last of the seventh as a fielder's choice and hit batter put two with one gone for Sigmon. During his at-bat the two men were put in motion attempting a double steal. The catcher came up firing tying to nab the runner at third, but launched it into left scoring one. Kim stepped in after Sigmon eventually worked a walk and whacked a two-run sigle through the right-side. David Beard was hit by Fox with one out in the eighth to set the stage for an RBI double from Connor Meisner to make it 11-4.
Luke Nemeth entered the game in the ninth to close things out and got three consecutive infield popups to end the game.
