Devils and Lions Split Twinbill on Sunday at MacPhail

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson baseball got back to their winning ways on Sunday as a Ryan Thompson bases-loaded walk in the ninth gave the Red and White a 6-5 win in game one. However, the visiting College of New Jersey got revenge in the backend of the twinbill earning a 5-1 victory to salvage a non-conference split at MacPhail Field.

Game One - DEVILS 6, Lions 5
Pitching Decision
W - Grayson Walker (3-1) | L - Matt Santos (1-1)

Inside the Game
Red Devils starter Ethan Hamilton allowed one baserunner in the first when he hit Chris Reeder, before getting Justin Marcario to groundout to second baseman Ethan Sodl for the final out. Dickinson would touch up Ben Amon during the home-half as a walk to Dylan Posencheg and two-bagger from Kenny Tagliareni led to an RBI groundout for Kaden Sigmon to take a 1-0 edge with one away. After Christian Kim worked a walk men were on the corners to bring up Thompson. He reached safely on an error by Ryan Goodall at first to score run number two. Then, two batters later Sodl pushed it out to 3-0 with a knock to right scoring Kim, before Johnny Bruno struck out to retire the side. Hamilton was unable to provide the shutdown inning in the second as consecutive singles and an error had runners at first and third for Michael Schumacher. He would reach on a fielder's choice to score one and cut it to 3-1 through two.

After both pitchers went "three up, three down" during the third TCNJ chipped another run off the deficit in the fourth when a DC miscue, fielder's choice and single left two on for Zach Weiner who worked a free pass from Hamilton to fill the bags for Jack O'Donnell. He kept things moving with an RBI groundout to Tagliareni, before Jack Haynes watched strike three to wrap up the top of the frame. The home-half saw a leadoff single to Chase Weller amount to nothing as the next three batters were setdown. The score stayed at 3-2 heading to the sixth where the Lions loaded the bases with the first three hitters leading to back-to-back RBI hits for O'Donnell and Haynes to give the visitors a 4-3 advantage. That was the end of the day for Hamilton as Walker came in and worked out of further damage with a strikeout and double-play. TCNJ added on more in the ensuing inning when a Devils error allowed the leadoff man to reach, before two batters later Andrew Fernandez ripped a two-bagger to right plating one and making it 5-3 as the game went to the stretch. Pinch-hitter Will Ferris started the frame with a knock to left and Posencheg was issued a walk to put two on for Tagliareni. He would not have the privilege of facing Amon as Santos entered the contest and after a double steal by the two runners Tagliareni scored them both with a single to right-center knotting things at 5-5 going to the eighth.

Neither side could do anything in that inning leaving the score deadlocked heading to the ninth. Walker would put DC in position to win the game in the bottom-half as he got a groundout and two strikeouts to wrap-up the top-half. With one down an error by Fernandez let Posencheg reach. He then stole second and third prompting two intentional walks of Tagliareni and Sigmon to put "ducks on the pond" everywhere for Kim. Unfortunately, he would pop-up to short for out number two before Thompson worked the game-ending RBI walk to claim the 6-5 win.

Game Two - Lions 5, DEVILS 1
Pitching Decision
W - Jackson Malouf (2-0) | L - Koll Peichel (2-2) | Ethan Earley (2)

Inside the Game
The Lions got right after Peichel to start the game as a hit-by-a-pitch and single set the stage for a two-out RBI single by Zach Hochheiser for the 1-0 edge. The DC pitcher then settled down and got Fernandez to watch strike three for the final out. They would then make it 2-0 during the second as Sebastian JnoBaptiste drew a leadoff walk, prior to Weiner driving him in with a double to deep left-center. Dickinson then tried to mount a rally in the home-half as walks to Weller and Ferris along with a hit from Sodl filled the pillows for Nathan Bowman. Unfortunately, he struck out swinging against Malouf for he final out of the frame. The Red and White did eventually touch up Malouf for one in the last of third when with two down a single by Sigmon set the stage for the RBI knock for Kim to bring the score to 2-1 heading to the fourth.

TCNJ got that run right back three batters into the frame as a triple off the stick of O'Donnell allowed for the groundout to second by Haynes to drive in the third of the game. Dickinson put two on base during the fifth thanks to a walk for Tagliareni and single by Sigmon, but Kim bounced into a fielder's choice for the final out as Tagliareni was forced out heading to third. With one gone in the sixth, Peichel found himself in a major jam as a walk and two singles loaded the bases for Goodall. He did not get to face the starter as Austin Buzza entered for the Devils and immediately got the second out when Goodall popped up to new second baseman Campbell Brusman. However, Reeder followed with a two-run frozen rope to center over the head of Buzza for a 5-1 advantage to last of the sixth. Weller tried to begin a rally as he produced a one-out two-bagger to left, but then Malouf recorded strikeouts number 10 and 11 of the game to retire the side.

Both bullpens would be shutdown the rest of the game as the combination of Charlie Bien, Joey Sangiuolo and Walker for the Red and White threw the final three innings allowing no runs and just two hits, while fanning five batters. Early took over for the Lions in the seventh and was just as strong as the starter posting three innings of two hit relief and striking out three including the final batter of the game to secure the win and save.
