CARLISLE, Pa. - Coming off of three-straight one-goal losses the 14th-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team righted the ship on Wednesday night. As
Sam Campbell and
Will Farrell netted four goals each to push the Red and White past the rival Franklin & Marshall College by a final of 14-8 in Centennial Conference action at Biddle Field.
The first quarter saw the visitors record the opening shot of the game as Will Mollihan missed the cage inside the first minute, while at the other end Sage Garito turned away Farrell. Four minutes later Garito was on full display again knocking away the attempt by
Griffin Moore. After the Dickinson defense forced a shot-clock violation the home side got on the board when Farrell ripped on to the back of the net with 8:42 left. Four minutes later Tommy Garofalo knotted the score. The Red and White had three of the final five shots of the period with Farrell being stoned by Garito, while Sam Capbell and
Skyler Schluter both missed the mark to end the period.
Dickinson was on Garito right out of the gate to begin the second as
Matt Thurston, Farrell and Moore all let shots go, but not able to test the keeper until
James Isaacson forced a save with 3:10 off the clock. Over the next three minutes the Devils got three more shots and tasked the keeper with making two more saves as results of F&M possessions that ended due to turnovers being caused by
Evan Karetsos and
Seamus McCloskey. Unfortunately, for DC it was the visitors who tallied the first two goals of the period as Liam Timmins and Garofalo scored on consecutive shots to grab a 3-1 lead with 7:38 left. However, from that point on the rest of the half belonged to the Red and White as Farrell scored three straight times with Schluter and
Ethan Gess each notching one assist. After Garito denied shutdown
Sascha Gannon, Moore bagged the fifth of the half for DC as they claimed a 5-3 advantage with 13:17 off the clock.
Chris Brandau made sure the Devs maintained the momentum heading to the break as he made a stop on Cullen Decker.
Garito made two more early saves in the third by stopping both Moore and Thurston, which allowed his side to record the first of the quarter thanks to Garofalo. A faceoff win by
John McKee led to DC getting the goal right back when Campbell let an unassisted rocket fly by the keeper to reclaim a two-goal cushion (6-4). The Red Devils fired the next seven shots with three of them tickling the twine as Campbell rounded out his hat trick and McKee notching his first of the night to extend the hosts advantage to 9-4 with 8:50 left. F&M tried to stem the tide for moment as Manny Ciminello and Will Mulligan went wide, while Brandau made a point-blank stop on Garofalo. Off that stop
Capp Reynolds tracked down the loose ball and watched Isaacson score a minute later to make it 10-4. After another world-class stop by Brandau on Garofalo, Gannon, Moore and Thurston all hit the post, before a groundball pickup from
Sam Bunten led to a maker from Thurston for an 11-4 edge heading to the final 15 minutes.
The Diplomats tried to start a rally to begin the fourth as they recorded the first four shots with Christian Sullivan and Garofalo each hitting the back of the net to pull within 11-6 at the 3:41 mark. A penalty assessed to F&M for a faceoff violation resulted in a man-up strike by
Ben Monroe off a nice feed from Schluter (12-6). Stops by Brandau against Mollihan and Garofalo appeared to stymie the Diplomats once again, but back-to-back strikes from Sullivan cut the deficit to 12-8 still with 6:27 remaining. However, a turnover by Mulligan forced by Reynolds led to Gannon cashing in for lucky number 13, before Campbell notched the 14th. The Devils continued to press, but backup goalie Eric Mueller denied Gess (2) and Moore. A final turnover caused by
Cole Schwartz allowed McCloskey to grab the loose ball and get it up field to run out the clock for the 14-8 win.
