SPARKS, Md. - The 14th-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team capped off their regular season non-conference portion of the schedule on Saturday afternoon with a 15-7 victory over the St. Mary's College of Maryland Seahawks at the USA Lacrosse Headquarters Tierney Field. The Red and White used a combination of a dominant first 30-minutes defensively and timely scoring to secure the win.
The Red Devils were rolling early as
John McKee claimed the opening faceoff, before letting a shot sail wide of Ben Robertson just five seconds in. However, 34-seconds later
Will Farrell buried his first of the day. Two minutes after that
Chris Brandau turned away Drew Goldscheider leading to
Will Single tracking down the loose ball and finding
Matt Thurston to make it 2-0. 63-ticks later it was 3-0 as
Skyler Schluter hit a wide open
Ethan Gess for the finish. Robertson had the answer for both
Jack Schutte and Farrell, prior to Schluter giving out assist number two when he hit
Griffin Moore for the 4-0 edge with 7:38 left in the opening period. Consecutive, SMC turnovers caused by
Evan Karetsos resulted in number five (
James Isaacson), before
Sam Campbell stretched it out to 6-0 still with 2:39 to play.
Ethan Ackerman and
Xander Usich would force the Seahawks into their eighth and ninth turnovers of the period giving DC the 6-0 lead through just one quarter.
Dickinson cashed in on their first two shots of the second as Isaacson setup Farrell just 39-seconds in, while Campbell ripped the net behind Robertson at the 1:09 mark to push the advantage out to 8-0. The defense continued to be the story of the game for DC as
Cole Schwartz ripped the rock free from Keegan Preis, which allowed Karetsos to come up with the loose ball leading to Robertson shutting down Thurston before Schluter handed out another helper to Gess for the 9-0 advantage with just over three minutes gone. After Robertson denied Moore the Seahawks finally dented Brandau with 8:46 remaining when Preis found Johnny McGrain. A faceoff win for
Ben Trucksess led to chances from
Lee Dunn (saved),
Sascha Gannon (crossbar), and Thurston (saved) over the next four minutes. However, the pressure would indeed result in another marker when Schluter deposited the rock to make it 10-1. Each team recorded four more shots in the period with SMC scoring once to trim the margin to 10-2 after two.
The DC shooting gallery towards Robertson continued over the opening three minutes of the third with Gess being stopped, Moore nicking two posts and Thurston missing the target. That resulted in a turnover by the Red and White leading to Joshua Martel netting two in a row for the Seahawks to cut it down to 10-4 with 9:37 left. SMC tried to extend their run to three in a row, but a blocked shot from Walker Krizman by Karetsos led to Isaacson striking unassisted for the 11-4 advantage as seven minutes had ticked off the clock. Each keeper recorded a stop over the ensuing three minutes, before Thurston rocketed one to the back of the cage to bump the gap to eight (12-4). Dickinson kept on letting the rock fly at the keeper as Gannon, Isaacson and Moore all missed wide, while Farrell tasked Robertson with another save. Another Brandau save led to a goal from Dunn, which was immediately followed by a faceoff win by McKee and tally for Moore. Garrett Brodfuehrer beat the horn to cut the deficit under double digits at 14-5 through three.
Both teams struggled to find their footing in the fourth as each team recorded just two shots over the first seven minutes of play as Farrell pinged the crossbar and Isaacson was stopped by Robertson. That save led to the second of the contest for Brodfuehrer.
Jack Murphy, Campbell and Farrell each let shots fly towards Robertson, but could not best the keeper. At the other end of the field the Seahawks rang two posts, before Preis cut it down to 14-7 at the 10:40 mark.
Patrick Scarborough who replaced Brandau between the pipes about halfway into the period made his first stop of the game against Martel, the ensuing groundball was tracked down by
Merrick Carey who found
Mac Childs which then led to a pass to
Ben Monroe for the finish and the 15-7 final.
