Inside the Game
After a scoreless first, it would be the visitors who struck first against
Grayson Walker as a hit batter and single put two on with no outs. A sacrifice bunt for Caleb Tereska moved both men into scoring position for Brendan Hughes. During his at-bat a passed ball would allow the runners to advance 90-feet plating one. No more damage was done though as Walker fanned the next two hitters to end the threat. The Devils had the answer versus Joseph Stern in the home-half as with two away three straight walks to
Ryan Thompson,
Dylan Posencheg and
Nathan Bowman set the stage for a two-run single to right-center for
Kenny Tagliareni. Then next man-up was
Andrew Mazzone and he deposited the ball through the right-side of the infield to plate one more to make it 3-1 after two.
A quiet third inning shifted the game to the fourth still at 3-1. However, in the top-half of that frame two singles open the inning, before a sac bunt allowed the two runners to get into scoring position for Ryan Riccio. He would deliver an RBI thanks to a sac fly to
Derek Smith. The Red and White came up with two more of their own during the bottom-half as a two-single by Bowman, led to an RBI two-bagger to right for Mazzone. He then traded places with
Kaden Sigmon after he smoked a double to deep right-center for the 5-2 lead.
The game stayed that way until the sixth when the Mules mounted a two-out rally thanks to a walk and single leading to a two-run single out to right by Jack Kent to pull the visitors to within 5-4. That chased Walker from the contest and brought on
Charlie Bien. He would wrap up the frame by painting the corner against Aidan Legner for strike three. Dickinson responded in the home-half off of new pitcher Ben Kollender as a two-out hit batter and walk set the stage for Smith. He would reach safely on a throwning error by the first baseman which allowed Mazzone (who was hit) to score. Sigmon who had worked a walk came in on a wild pitch with
Matt Torres in the box stretching the lead out to 7-4 with six in the books. Dickinson added one more during the eighth when with two gone Sigmon singled to right, before being driven home off a double from Smith.
Joey Sangiuolo who took over for Bien in the eighth allowed just one hit over his two innings of work as he got a groundout of Christian Schwarz for the final out of the ninth.
