BALTIMORE - The Dickinson baseball team headed into Sunday's Centennial Conference doubleheader with league-leading and fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins University looking to make a statement with first-place on the line. However, it would be the Blue Jays who made an emphatic statement in game one winning 26-8, before holding on for an 8-6 win in the second game at Babb Field.
Game One - Blue Jays 26, DEVILS 8
Time of Game - 2:57
Pitching Decision
W - Gabe Romano (6-0) | L -
Thomas Marshman (0-1)
Inside the Game
The Devils began the game with an infield single by
Kenny Tagliareni, but he would go no further as two flyouts and a groundout ended the top-half. The home part of the first was all Blue Jays as they sent 17 men to the plate against the pitching combination of
Thomas Marshman and
Evan Connery racking up 14 runs on nine hits (six home runs) to grab a 14-0 lead through one. Hopkins continued to pile it on adding two in the second and four during the third pushing it to 20-0.
Dickinson finally struck back in the fourth when
Andrew Mazzone knocked the first pitch of the frame over the right-field wall. Two batters later
Derek Smith recorded the second DC blast. However, the Jays answered back with five in the last of the inning. The Red and White started the fifth by having
Christian Kim reach on an error, before back-to-back doubles by
Dylan Posencheg and
Nathan Bowman allowing two to come home. Tagliareni followed with an RBI single to center. With one on and two gone, Smith picked up his second jack of the contest to trim it down to 25-7. After JHU got one in the last of the inning, the Devils got two-baggers from
Chase Weller and Tagliareni to plate the final run of the game for both sides.
Pitching then took over the rest of the way as there was just one hit recorded between the two sides the remainder of the game when
Kaden Sigmon singled to center with one down in the ninth, but went no further.
Game Two - Blue Jays 8, DEVILS 6
Time of Game - 2:29
Pitching Decision
W - Ryan Anderson (2-1) | L -
Ethan Hamilton (4-1) | S - Ben Keever (3)
Inside the Game
Dickinson had the lead just three batters into the game when Mazzone and Sigmon traded doubles to make it 1-0. However, he would be stranded on the bases as Smith and
Matt Torres went down on strikes to retire the side. Unfortunately, for the Red and White the home side had the immediate response against DC starter
Ethan Hamilton as back-to-back singles started the frame, before Matthew Cooper sent an offering over the wall in right-center for the 3-1 lead through one. Hopkins opened it up to 5-1 through three thanks to five singles during the last of the third.
The Devils went to work in the fourth with the hopes of chipping away at the deficit and got off to a great start when Sigmon smoked a pitch beyond the wall in right. A double by Smith, followed by a flyout from Torres had a man at third with one down bringing up
Ryan Thompson. During his at-bat a wild pitch unleashed by Charles Monterrosa let the runner race home. Thompson was able to work a walk to put another man on base, which allowed Kim to tie the game with a two-run bomb to left-center. Posencheg became the potential go-ahead run after a double to center, but was left out there thanks to a strikeout and lineout.
Koll Peichel came in for the home-half, but allowed a double and single to let the Blue Jays reclaim the lead at 6-5 through four. An inning later two singles and a double to kick things off scored one, before a fielder's choice two batters later bumped the advantage to 8-5 going to the sixth.
Over the next two frames the DC pitching combination of Peichel and
Joey Sangiuolo held the home side at bay giving their offense a chance to get back in the game. The Devils began the eighth with a bang as Torres ripped a solo shot to left. A single by Thompson let the Red and White put the tying run at the dish. However, a flyout along with a pair of strikeouts ended the rally. A Tagliareni single opened the ninth against Keever, but two strikeouts and a groundout wrapped up the game.
