Inside the Game
The Red and White were right on Bullets starter James Wheedon from the word go sending 11 men to the plate in the top of the first. Two batters in it was 1-0 thanks to a double by
Kenny Tagliareni and a single down the line for
Andrew Mazzone. A knock for
Kaden Sigmon and a wild pitch placed two in scoring position for
Matt Torres. He and the ensuing batter
Ryan Thompson drew walks to force home one, before another free pass this time to
Dylan Posencheg with two gone made it 3-0. A base hit off the stick of
Nathan Bowman kept things going as Torres came home. That brought Patrick Clementi to the mound and he immediately hit Tagliareni to drive home the fifth. The home side pulled one back in the home-half thanks to a pair of singles and a two-bagger from Kyle Miller.
Dickinson kept on going in the top of the second as knocks from
Derek Smith and Sigmon coupled with a walk to Torres set the stage for a two-run double by Thompson to stretch it out to 7-1. Bruno Spadafora became the third arm of the day for GC and was greeted quite rudely by a two-run two-bagger from
Christian Kim (9-1). A free pass to Posencheg put two men on for Tagliareni who provided an RBI single to left, before Mazzone came up with an RBI of his own to make it 11-1 and forcing the removal of Spadafora. After Sigmon reached to fill the pillows versus Brett Leighton, Smith came up with an RBI single for the 13-1 advantage going to the last of the second. Devils starter
Grayson Walker did exactly what you want your pitcher to do producing two consecutive "one-two-three" frames, prior to allowing a pair of runners in the fourth but no damage sending it to the fifth still at 13-1.
In the bottom-half of the frame the Bullets would chip away at the deficit as the first five men reached allowing three players to score cutting it down to 13-4. The game stayed that way until after the stretch as the Bullets got three more back in the bottom of the seventh versus the relief duo of
Evan Connery and
Peyton Fox as seven consecutive batters reached on just two hits and aided by one DC error. However,
Pat Metzger entered the game with two gone and got a groundout to Sigmon at third to strand the bases full.
The Devils got those runs right back in the eighth against Andrew Weinbrum as a double by Smith and error allowing Torres to reach brought Kim to the dish with two on and one out. He would take advantage of the second home error of the frame to plate one. After a free pass to Posencheg, Bowman smoked the Weinbrum offering through the left-side to score one more extending the margin to 15-7 and leaving the bases full for Tagliareni. He did not get to face Weinbrum however, as Tyler Hillson took over on the hill and walked Tagliareni, which set the for the two-run single by Mazzone to make it 18-7. Then with the Bullets facing last call against Metzger he would get two quick outs and then allow a single, walk and balk to place two in scoring position for Ryan Murphy. He smacked one through the left-side to drive home two, before getting Alex Angulo to whiff at strike three for the final out.
