ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - After making a trip all the way to the Centennial Conference final in 2022, the Dickinson women's soccer team began their 2023 slate with a convincing 5-0 shutout over the host St. Mary's (Md.) on Day One of the Seahawk Classic at Roberts Stadium.
The home side recorded the first shot of the match with 9:08 off the clock when Keira O'Neail sent one wide. After that Dickinson put their opponent on their backheels as
Katie Vassilakos and
Ava Prisco (2) tasked Kylie Wells with making three saves, while
Emma Cooney opened the scoring in the 21st-minute with an unassisted strike. Devils keeper
Sophia Kavulich recorded her first stop of the season at the 26:08 mark denying Ella Raines. The next ten minutes were played without a shot, until with 37:40 gone
Emily Dunkel ripped one at Wells who had the answer. Dickinson then opened up a shooting gallery against Wells as
Sophia Elguera,
Isra Khan (3) and
Becca Schulman each recorded a shot within the final six minutes of the half forcing three more stops out of Wells.Â
The Red and White just kept going on the attack coming out of the halftime break as Prisco opened her DC account in the 50th, before Wells stopped her two more times and
Lila Brown,
Sarah Cudmore and Vassilakos all went off target with their opportunities. The Devils extended the margin to 3-0 at the 57:38 when Elguera found
Bridget Merkel for her first Devil tally, which was followed about six minutes later with Khan setting up Schulman for the finish and the 4-0 advantage. Elguera attempted twice to make it five, but Wells had the answer. However, Khan did eventually stretch it out to 5-0 in the 72nd. Dickinson would not allow a shot in the second-half until Megan Stambaugh was turned away by new keeper
Elizabeth Allen who replaced Kavulich in the 74th.
Ava Burgess and
Rachel Gevanthor each chipped in one more shot to leave DC with a 25 to 4 shot advantage at the end of the match.
