CARLISLE, Pa. - After two one-goal home losses so far this season the Dickinson field hockey team finally tasted "sweet, sweet" victory at the Biddle Field Complex on Wednesday afternoon as the Red and White knocked off the visiting Juniata College Eagles 4-1 in non-conference action.
It took four-plus minutes for the game to see its first shot as
Alexandra Hockwitt was turned aside by Eagles goalie Amanda Puza, before
Ella Krenzer poked home a loose ball for the 1-0 lead. Dickinson continued to apply the pressure with two more looks at cage through
Megan McClure (Puza save) and
Katie Marthins who went wide of goal. Then with 6:21 off the clock
Becca Woods recorded the final shot of the period, but it was blocked down by the Juniata defense. The remaining nine minutes would be played primarily in the middle of the pitch as DC took a 1-0 edge to the second.
The Devils continued to push the play to begin the period as Sammy Moonay,
Sophia Pereira,
Morgan Yandow-Harding and Krenzer all tallying shots in the opening five minutes, however, Puza was able to record two more stops. Dickinson would then make it 2-0 when a Juniata foul in the attacking area resulted in a penalty stroke for DC which was put away by Woods. Three minutes later the Red and White extended their advantage when the Marthins sisters connected with each other as Katie found
Abby Marthins for the finish. The final three chances of the half belonged to the Eagles with DC keeper
Olivia Renault beating away an attempt from Sydney Witter, before Witter cashed in a penalty stroke to make it 3-1 through 30 minutes.
To start the third period each team would make a change between the pipes with Brittney McMullen taking over for the Eagles, while
Taylor Schlein replaced Renault for the Devils. Dickinson would primarily carry the play as they outshot the visitors 4-0 over the opening 14 minutes with attempts coming off the sticks of
Natalie Slusser, Pereira, and Woods causing McMullen to record one stop. Then, with just 22-seconds left
Abby Hill fed the ball across the attacking area from the right-wing to Hockwitt who netted the first of her collegiate career to make it 4-1 after three.
Dickinson went to work in the fourth early with A. Marthins and
Emma Snyder forcing stops out of McMullen with just two minutes off the clock. In the 55th-minute, the visitors would tally their first shot of the game since the 27:00 mark as Witter was blocked out by the defense. A minute later off a penalty corner played in by Sierra Rossman, Colleen Creneti unleashed a rip that was knocked away by Schlein. The Red and White notched the final five shots of the match with McMullen denying the trio of
Malena Malka Goldman, A. Marthins, and Woods, while McClure and Yandow-Harding both missed the target to see out the 4-1 result.
