BALTIMORE – The Dickinson men's soccer team dominated the possession over the first 45 minutes and held an 8-3 advantage in shots at the break against the host Goucher College on Tuesday night. Then in the second period the home side held a 9-6 edge in shots, but the Red and White netted the only goal to survive Beldon Field with a 1-0 non-conference win over the Gophers.
Inside the opening seven minutes both sides were able to record chances with Michael Adekanmbi being turned aside by DC keeper
Alexander Henrich, while
Chaz Smith sailed a shot off the mark. Five minutes later Goucher goalie Ale Sternini was called into action by
Ethan Jarden. After Rafael Berhanu blasted a shot high over the goal, the Devils seized the momentum tallying the next six shots thanks to
Johnny Diederich,
Alessandro Forero,
Cole Jennings,
Finn Weber (2) and Jarden. However, none of those attempts tested Sternini. The Gophers tried to go into the break up 1-0, but Henrich shut the door on Flynn McNally with just 54-seconds left to take the match to halftime.
The home side had the Red and White on the backfoot to start the second period recording three corners, resulting in three shots which included one ringing the crossbar and another one being denied by Henrich all within the first ten minutes. That pressure seemed to wake the visitors up as the ensuing five minutes saw DC take complete control. First, in the 53rd-minute,
Saul Iwowo stepped into a shot and forced a stop out of Sternini, before two minutes later Iwowo headed a ball off the crossbar to keep things scoreless. Then in the 56th-minute,
Cole Jennings had a shot blocked. Fortunately though for the Devils a minute later they were on the board when Diederich played a ball into the box to Weber who pounded an offering past Sternini for the 1-0 lead. After a shot by Drew Gentile went wide, Dickinson tried to make the game safe during the 72nd-minute earning two corners, resulting in a header from Diedercih which was stopped. Goucher had the better of the chances over the final 15-minutes as five Dickinson fouls led to four shots three of which that were saved by
Nick Potter who took over between the sticks for the final half-hour. The Red and White had one final chance to make things safe at the 84:01 mark, unfortunately
Jordan Grivekov was denied by Sternini. The Gophers got one last look at Potter's goal in the 89th, but Gus Dalzell missed high to end the match.
