SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Sophomore midfielder
Maggie Carson found the back of the cage with just 2:58 left in the game to secure the first win of the season for the Dickinson field hockey team as they edged out the host Susquehanna University River Hawks 2-1 on Wednesday night at Sassafras Field in non-conference action.
The opening seven minutes were spent mostly in the midfield with neither side recording a shot until the 7:24 mark when Katie Bucher had her attempt denied by DC goalie
Olivia Renault. The remainder of the period would go by without another shot as Dickinson's best chance came in the 12th-minute when
Natalie Slusser played in a penalty corner, but it did not result in an attempt for the Devils.
Susquehanna made their first offering of the second count when with 1:21 off the clock Emma Campitelli worked into the left-side of the attacking area and fired a shot across the goalmouth that somehow leaked past Renault for the 1-0 lead. The River Hawks kept up the attack over the next three minutes as Campitelli had a shot snuffed out by the keeper, before Kari Schmidt pinged the pipe off a corner. Dickinson locked things down defensively after that and did not allow another home shot the rest of the frame. However, the Red and White would start applying some offensive pressure of their own in the 21st-minute and breakthrough when a corner inserted by
Abby Marthins came to
Morgan Yandow-Harding who let a shot go from the left wing that was deflected off the stick of
Ella Krenzer past Ashley Derrick for the equalizer. There would be just one more shot in the half and it came at the 24:19 mark as Marthins ripped a shot beyond Derrick, but unfortunately for the Devils Schmidt was there to sweep it out of trouble sending the game to the break.Â
The visitors owned the opening five minutes of the third as they earned seven penalty corners and recorded three shots with one resulting in a save from Derrick coming from Yandow-Harding. Then, beginning in the 39th-minute the River Hawks seized the momentum back as rips by Taylor Rothermel and Bucher forcing stops from Renault. Susquehanna had a great opportunity to reclaim the lead with 40:06 off the clock when a foul by Dickinson inside the area resulted in a penalty stroke. Fortunately, for the Devils Renault had the answer for Gracie Roush to keep the score deadlocked. Bucher appeared to give SU the lead with 23-seconds left in the period as she slipped a shot past the keeper, but
Jackie Smith was able to clear the line.Â
Each team traded chances in the opening ten minutes of the fourth with
Alexandra Hockwitt missing wide for DC, while Bucher was denied by Renault off a corner. Dickinson finally grabbed the lead in the 58th-minute when a corner played in by Krenzer came to Yandow-Harding who had her shot tipped home by Carson for the 2-1 lead. Over the final two minutes the Devils defense was staunch as they did not allow a shot the rest of the way to collect the victory.
