POTOMAC, Md. - The fifth-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team showed off their offensive depth on Saturday afternoon as nine different members of the Red and White found the net in a 15-13 non-conference victory over the nationally-recognized Roanoke College at Kline Alumni Stadium on the campus of the Bullis School.
The game could not have started any better for Dickinson as
John McKee took the opening faceoff right down the field and fired the rock past Alex Feuer for the 1-0 lead. Off the following draw Feuer had the answer for the shot from
Sam Campbell, which set the stage for the Maroons to score on their first two shots of the contest thanks to Noah Bell and Clayton Bewick. The Devils responded with a marker for
Owen Porter off the dish by
Skyler Schluter just over a minute later to knot the score at 2-2 with five minutes gone. However, Roanoke used the following four-plus minutes to record seven of the next eight shots and pick up three goals to jump ahead 5-2 still with five minutes left. After a save on Jay Frye by
Patrick Scarborough, the DC offense attempted to get back onto the scoreboard, but Feuer turned away
Ethan Gess,
Matt Thurston and Porter. Dickinson eventually did solve Feuer again when
Griffin Moore hit Gess for the goal to make it 5-3 through one.
The Red and White kept control of the momentum early in the second as the trio of
Liam Carney,
James Isaacson and Thurston scored on three of their first five chances to turn a two-goal deficit into a one-goal lead at 6-5. Wyatt Whitlow would bring the Maroons level, but a faceoff win for McKee resulted in Schluter setting up Porter for the finish (7-6). Unfortunately, for DC it took less than a minute for Roanoke to knot things back up when Luke Kammerman beat the goalie. A stop by Scarborough on Kammerman, allowed Dickinson to race back down the field and record four consecutive shots with Gess, Moore and Thurston tasking Feuer to make one stop, before Gess did tickle the twine making it 8-7 at halftime.
Frye won the opening faceoff of the third for Roanoke and took it right into the attacking area firing a shot beyond the reach of Scarborough locking the score again (8-8). Feuer made two more stops on
Cullen Mulhern and Moore, before Porter picked up a loose ball and dished it off to Mulhern who returned it to Porter for the finish. A pair of Dickinson giveaways, allowed for Luca Docking (2) and Noah Good to all let shots fly at cage, but Scarborough made three saves to keep it at 9-8. Then, off a a successful clear Isaacson ripped a shot past Feuer to open up a two-goal cushion (10-8). A slashing penalty against
Cole Schwartz led to two shots with Good being stoned by Scarborough, prior Docking setting up Kammerman to pull within one. However, the Red and White were not done as Porter notched an unassisted tally to make it 11-9 entering the fourth.
The Maroons began the final period with their "hair on fire" as Sean Kennedy, Kammerman and Whitlow went on a 3-0 run to recapture a slim 12-11 edge with 4:49 gone. Dickinson then embarked on a 4-0 charge thanks to a stretch of "make it, take it " lacrosse, with McKee winning three faceoffs leading to goals by
Mac Childs,
Sascha Gannon, Carney (man-up) and Schluter (man-up) to take a 15-12 advantage inside the last seven minutes. Roanoke collected one final goal on the evening when Kammerman grabbed an unassisted tally to set the 15-13 final.
