CARLISLE, Pa. - The fifth-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team went into the halftime break trailing the 20th-ranked Kenyon College Owls 7-5 on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Biddle Field. However, the Red and White put on a defensive clinic over the final 30 minutes outshooting the visitors 31-9 and outscoring them 8-1 en route to a 13-8 non-conference win.
The opening five minutes of the game saw three combined goals as KC goalie Adam Hall turned away both
Ethan Gess and
Evan Karetsos, which allowed David Chintala to open the scoring. Dickinson responded off the ensuing faceoff when
Sascha Gannon found
Luke Whalen for the tally. The Owls collected the next two markers with Chintala burying his second with 4:42 off the clock, before Tanner Lewis bested
Patrick Scarborough for the 3-1 edge two minutes later. The Devils the ripped off the following six shots through
Sam Campbell,
Owen Porter,
Skyler Schluter,
Matt Thurston and
Luke Whalen going off the mark, prior to Schluter setting up
Ren LaMotte for the finish. Kenyon notched one more heading into the second thanks to Lucas Flynn (4-2).
The home side cut the margin to one just 15-seconds into the frame when
John McKee won the faceoff collected the loose ball and found
Sam Bunten for the goal. Unfortunately, it took just nine seconds after that for the Owls to get it back courtesy of Mike Kapral. After a couple of giveaways by each team the Devils hit the back of the net again this time through Gannon (Campbell assist). A save at the other end by Scarborough set the stage for three more DC shots with Porter hitting
Ethan Gess to level the score at 5-5. Once again though, the Owls had the answer scoring on their next two shots to reclaim a 7-5 edge at half.Â
Period number three would be all about the Red and White as they did not allow a shot to Kenyon and forced nine turnovers, while collecting four tallies themselves. First, just 43-ticks in,
James Isaacson rang the post, but Thurston tracked down the groundball and stuck the rock behind Hall. Then, three minutes later following a pipe hit by Porter, Isaacson grabbed an unassisted marker to tie the game 7-7. Hall would then deny Porter, but would be beaten by Gannon to let the Red and White go ahead 8-7 with not even five minutes off the clock. Isaacson added one more to the ledger with just under six minutes left to cap the scoring for the frame at 9-7 DC.Â
Dickinson continued to pepper the Kenyon cage early in the fourth with Gannon, Isaacson, Schluter and Thurston all asking questions of Hall tasking him with making one save. Then, with 8:46 remaining, Thurston pushed it up to 10-7, before
Jack Deady knocked the ball free from Gavin Gumucio leading to the hat-trick finish from Isaacson (11-7). After Chintala pinged the crossbar off the ensuing faceoff, both Campbell and Gannon had shots blocked prior to the pair linking up for the 12th goal of the game with Gannon cashing in. The Owls tried to find a way back into the game as Chintala cut it to 12-8, but they could get no closer with Schluter hitting Isaacson for his fourth and the 13-8 final.Â
