EWING, N.J. - In an attempt to beat out the inclement weather that is supposed to pound the tri-state area on Saturday, the Dickinson baseball team had their non-conference road doubleheader with The College of New Jersey moved to Friday afternoon at George Ackerman Park. The Red and White had a rough game one falling 9-0, before handing the Lions their first setback of the season 3-2 in game two.
Game One: Lions 9, DEVILS 0
Time of Game: 2:20
Pitching Decision: W - Ben Amon (2-0) | L -
Austin Buzza (1-2)
Inside the Game
Buzza hit some trouble in the last of the first when with two out and one on he allowed a single to Ryan Goodall and a free pass to Andrew Fernandez filled the bags for Jack Haynes. He would work a walk out of Buzza to score one, before Michael Schumacher ripped a two-run single to right for a 3-0 lead after one. TCNJ made it 4-0 during the last of the second when Mike LaGravenis doubled, leading to an RBI knock by Justin Marcario. Dickinson recorded a quartet of singles over the next three innings thanks to
Chase Weller,
Kenny Tagliareni,
Matt Torres and
Luke Gartland, but none of them were able to come across to score as the game stayed 4-0 into the sixth. Following a "one-two-three" top of the frame by Amon, the home side attempted to stretch their lead against DC reliever
Matteo George. Base hits from Schumacher and LaGravenis placed two with two gone for Marcario who tripled down the right-field line making the lead 6-0 through six. The Lions racked up three more during the last of the eighth versus
Glen Cantalupo Jr. when with men at the corners Chris Reeder provided a sacrifice fly to left, before a wild pitch and Haynes RBI single extended the gap to the final margin of 9-0.
Devils Mound Report
Buzza (104 pitches) got the start and took the loss after tossing five innings giving up six hits and four runs, while striking out five. George (34 pitches) went one frame surrendering three hits and two runs to go along with a strikeout. The remaining two pitchers Cantalupo Jr. (42 pitches) and
Charlie Bien (3 pitches) combined for two innings allowing two hits and three runs.
Game Two: DEVILS 3, Lions 2
Time of Game: 2:30
Pitching Decision: W -
Brian Riley (2-0) | L - Jack O'Shea (1-1) | S -
Joey Sangiuolo (3)
Inside the Game
Both starters posted a quiet first as Jackson Malouf setdown the Devils, while
Koll Peichel retired the Lions. Then, in the top of the second walks to Torres and
Josh Markley had two with two down for
Ethan Sodl. He stepped into the box and slapped an RBI single through the left-side to give Dickinson the early 1-0 lead. However, in the home-half of the frame a walk and a single, followed by a groundout put two runners in scoring position with two away for LaGravenis. He would reach safely on a Dickinson error allowing both men to cross for a 2-1 advantage entering the third. The Red and White responded quite nicely as both Tagliareni and
Dylan Posencheg reached safely to begin the inning setting the stage for an RBI knock for
Ryan Thompson. Unfortunately, that was all the Devils could do as Torres,
Kaden Sigmon and Markley were retired to stall the threat.Â
Over the next three innings both pitchers were excellent as neither allowed any kind of rally to develop keeping the game locked at 2-2 heading to the sixth. In the top-half, Markley started things with a single, but Weller, Sodl and Gartland went down on strikes to send things to the home-half. That was when Riley went to the hill for the Devils and allowed one hit, before recording a flyout, groundout and strikeout. Malouf was then replaced to kickoff the seventh by O'Shea who gave up singles to Tagliareni and Posencheg to put men on the corners for Thompson. He would not produce a hit, but would have an effective at-bat as he hit into a double-play to drive home Tagliareni for the 3-2 edge. Sangiuolo was then summoned from the bullpen to begin the eighth and he gave up a single to LaGravenis, while inducing a pair of groundouts and a pop-up to allow no damage. He would finish out the save in the ninth by getting Haynes to groundout to second for the final out.
Devils Mound Report
Peichel (107 pitches) continued his outstanding start to the season with five innings pitched scattering just three hits and two runs (none earned), while fanning nine. Riley (23 pitches) landed the win with two frames of shutout relief adding two more strikeouts. He was followed by Sangiuolo (25 pitches) who nabbed his third save of the season thanks to two innings of two hit scoreless relief with a strikeout.
