WINCHESTER, Va. – The Dickinson baseball team fell behind early, but scratched and clawed all afternoon long against the third-ranked Hornets of Shenandoah University. Unfortunately, the Red and White were not quite able to dig all the way out of the hole as the Hornets held-on for the 6-5 non-conference win at Bridgeforth Stadium.
Time of Game: 2:34
Pitching Decision: W – Anthony Arrichiello (2-1) | L –
Ben Myers (1-2) | S – Joey Mitchell (2)
The pitchers were on full display early as Michael Myers for the Hornets and
Ben Myers for the Red and White combined to allow just one hit and three walks through the first three innings keeping things scoreless. In the fourth, a two-out single from
Kaden Sigmon gave DC a chance, but
Josh Markley lined out to second to retire the side. Myers then hit some problems for the Devils during the home-half of the frame as three singles loaded the bags with one down for Haden Madagan. He smacked a two-run single through the left-side to make it 2-0, before a pair of Dickinson fielding miscues later in the fourth resulted in two more crossing the plate for a 4-0 advantage through four. The Red and White had a chance to get some runs back as a two-bagger from
Nathan Bowman and free pass to
Kenny Tagliareni had two on with two gone. The brought
Dylan Posencheg to the dish and he poked a single down the left-field line cutting the deficit to 4-1 chasing Myers from the contest. Southpaw Anthony Arrichiello was summoned from the pen and immediately walked
Ryan Thompson to load the bases for
Matt Torres. Unfortunately, he bounced into a fielder's choice to retire the side. The Hornets were back on the board during the bottom half of the frame as Frankie Ritter lifted the Myers pitch over the fence in left to push the advantage to 5-1. That was the end of the day for Myers as
Brian Riley entered the game and recorded a groundout and strikeout to allow no more damage. After Dickinson went down one-two-three in the sixth, Shenandoah collected a leadoff jack for Madagan making it 6-1. Then with two away and one on at second,
Joey Sangiuolo was summoned from the pen and got Ritter to flyout to left for the last out.
The game stayed 6-1 until the top of eighth, when a one-out double by Thompson and a Shenandoah error allowing Torres to reach placing men on the corners for Sigmon. He worked a walk off of Arrichiello to load the cushions for Markley. However, he would not get the chance to face the same pitcher as Brian Ferreira was brought to the hill and he was greeted quite rudely by Markley who produced a grand slam with a shot to deep left-center giving the Devils life at 6-5. In the ninth, Dickinson had a chance when with one away a single by Posencheg and walk to Thompson placed two on, but Torres unfortunately bounced into the game-ending double play.
