HAVERFORD, Pa. - The seventh-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team exploded over the first 30-minutes to take a commanding 9-2 lead over the host Haverford College at Swan Field. Despite the Fords getting the better of the play the rest of the game the Red and White held on for a 12-11 Centennial Conference win on Saturday. With wins today by both Dickinson and Swarthmore the top two seeds in the upcoming CC tournament have been secured as the Garnet will be the top seed, while the Devils will occupy the two line meaning the schools will host semifinal games on Friday, May 3rd.
Dickinson recorded the first three shots of the game inside the opening two minutes with
Sascha Gannon firing one past Andy Tieso. Less than a minute later, the visitors found themselves two men up leading to
Colin Williams finding
Owen Porter for the second, before
John McKee claimed the ensuing faceoff and buried the rock for a 3-0 lead with not even three minutes gone. Following a stop by Tieso on Skyler Schulter,
Griffin Moore got to the loose ball and got it over to
Ethan Gess to make it 4-0. Haverford finally recorded their first two shots with five minutes gone as Will Graves went off the mark, before Reid Tietjen forced a stop out of
Patrick Scarborough. That allowed the Devils to go back down the field with Porter ultimately finding Schluter for a goal, before a few minutes later
Cole Schwartz jarred the rock free from Matt Richards leading to Porter posting the sixth of the frame. Haverford did pull one back thanks Evan Wolpert to trim it down to 6-1 after one.
The first ten minutes of the second the period saw neither team score as each keeper was tasked with making two stops as Scarborough denied Richards and Tietjen, while Tieso shutdown
Matt Thurston and Williams to keep the margin at five. Coming off a failed clear from the Fords both
Sam Campbell and Schluter went off the mark, before Williams struck unassisted. After a giveaway by Dickinson, Scarborough denied Richards twice, but Wolpert corralled the rebound and put it home. The Red and White would respond with two more prior to the end of the half with
Mac Childs and Gess each besting Tieso making it 9-2 through 30 minutes.Â
Haverford chipped one off the margin with 2:14 gone courtesy of Wolpert. Over the next nearly ten minutes both sides were kept off the scoreboard as the keepers continued to be on full display with Scarborough notching three stops, while Tieso beat aside chances from
James Isaacson, Gannon and Thurston. The Fords picked up their second tally of the period from Richards with 10:51 off the clock cutting it down to 9-4. However, the Dickinson defense would force Danny Hoehler to give the rock up leading to them pulling one back thanks to Porter (Schluter assist) opening the cushion up to six at 10-4. Once again it was the home side that ended a period with a marker when Richards finished off a pass from Philip Passalaqua (10-5).Â
The early part of the fourth quarter belonged to the Fords as Tieso made three saves, allowing Richards to strike twice cutting the gap to 10-7. However, back-to-back faceoff wins for
Ben Trucksess resulted in consecutive tallies by Gess off of an assist each from Schluter and Thurston to make it 12-7. The two sides shared the next dozen shots with Tieso making two saves and his teammates notching two more on the offensive end (12-9) with six minutes left. Over the final three minutes Dickinson would be held without a shot, while the hosts got two more goals from Richards to set the 12-11 final.
