Devils Battle to the End, but Fall Just Short Against Eagles

SAINT DAVID'S, Pa. - The Dickinson men's basketball team went an impressive 23-of-25 at the free throw line and put four players in double-digits led by 21 from newcomer Jacob Pichay, but it was not enough on the night as the host Eastern University held on for the 84-78 win at The Nest on Thursday night.

First Half
  • Things were tight early as three balls for Cole Cosby and Joey Dopirak had it at 6-6 with four minutes gone.
  • A jumper by Connor Fleet kickstarted a 9-3 spurt for the home side ending on a triple by Nick Mate to take a 15-9 edge at the 11:43 mark.
  • Buckets once again for the duo of Cosby and Dopirak cut it to 17-14, but a Mate three ball sparked a 13-3 run by the Eagles stretching their advantage to 30-17 with 13:50 off the clock.
  • Six combined foul shots for Isaiah Edmond and Dane Moran coupled with tallies out of the hands of Matt Mahoney, Jacob Pichay and Cosby closed the gap to two at 34-32 at the 17:46 mark.
  • However, a three pointer from Mate and four points put up by Fleet helped the Eagles to push the margin to seven (41-34) at the break.
Second Half
  • Edmond opened up the period with an "old-fashioned" three-point play to make it 41-37, but two shots at the charity line for both Josh Harris and Fleet opened the lead to 47-39 inside four minutes gone.
  • The trio of Edmond, Moran and Pichay used the ensuing two minutes to find the bottom of the bucket, unfortunately, the Red and White still could not get back to even trailing 49-46.
  • Dickinson would get within one (51-50) thanks to buckets by Cosby and Moran, before Olise Onyeka, DeJuan Taylor and Fleet embarked on a 10-2 sprint making it 61-52 still with half the frame to go.
  • Free throws for Edmond and Pichay helped DC climb back to 61-57, but treys from Fleet and Mate helped the Eagles fly their lead to 71-57 just under eight minutes to go.
  • Six foul shots put home by Pichay and additional baskets for Edmond and Moran during the next three minutes still left the Red and White behind 75-67.
  • Matt Mahoney and Luis Ruiz joined Edmond and Moran throughout the rest of the half to try and bring Dickinson all the way back, however, the hosts were able to keep the Devils just far enough away to claim the 84-78 win.
