CARLISLE - The Dickinson football team returned home on Saturday afternoon to see an opponent they haven't battled since 1999 in the Carnegie Mellon University Tartans. Unfortunately, for the Red and White despite racking up 352 yards of offense the visitors put up 664 yards, including 371 on the ground en route to a 70-29 conference win at Biddle Field.
First Quarter
- CMU got the ball to start and used the ground game led by a three-headed monster of Willem Bouma, Joey McGinnis IV and Giacomo Valente to go eleven plays and 65 yards ultimately ending with a one-yard QB sneak from short yardage specialist Mark Wamhoff (Justin Caputo kick).
- The ensuing Dickinson possession saw Ben Klassen complete passes to Cedric Benning III, Leon Friebel and Kevin Schmidt to get up to the midfield stripe. A late hit on Klassen gave DC an extra 15 yards down to the CMU34. Three consecutive runs by Benning III set the stage for Klassen to find Schmidt for a four-yard touchdown tying the game at 7-7 (Justin Worobel kick).
- McGinnis IV found the trio of Reece Kolke, Danny Moynihan and Carter Sheets to advance into Devil territory at the 39. Three McGinnis IV rushes along with two carries from Bouma had the Tartans once again on the doorstep at the DC1. That was once again when Wamhoff plunged in to reclaim the lead at 14-7 at the end of the first (Justin Caputo kick).
Second Quarter
- After the Devils ensuing possession resulted in a Michael Furlong punt, the guests began their next drive on their own 17. McGinnis IV connected with Sheets three times to get up to the DC49. On fourth-and-one, Bouma would keep things alive with a 26-yard run down the right side (DC23). Four plays later it would become 21-7 when McGinnis took it in himself (Justin Caputo kick).
- A three-and-out for Dickinson once again put the ball in the hands of the Tartans on the CMU33. This time McGinnis worked the ball through the air linking up with Nick McCullough, Kolke and Moynihan to get all the way to the DC2. The Dickinson defense dug in over the next three plays with tackles coming from Joaquin Acuna, Sean Couvertiere, Juan Pablo Garcia and Joshua Moses leaving CMU with fourth-and-one. Unfortunately for the hosts once again Wamhoff took it in for the score (Justin Caputo kick) (28-7).Â
- Rushes for Dane Sorensen and Klassen along with another personal foul against the Tartans had Dickinson resting on the CMU23 with a first-and-ten. After an incompletion, Klassen connected with Kellen Boyer for 17 before Sorensen scampered home from six away to cut it down to 28-14 with 1:20 left (Justin Worobel kick).
- McGinnis IV then led an aerial assault finding five different targets during a nine-play, 78-yard march ending with a 15-yard strike to Sheets for the 35-14 halftime edge (Justin Caputo kick).
Third Quarter
- Dickinson began the period strong as Klassen hit Friebel for 15, before hooking up with him again three plays later for a 57-yard touchdown bomb cutting the deficit to 35-21 (Justin Worobel kick).
- McGinnis IV continued to pick on the Devils defense with the short passing game finding Sheets for five, Kolke for 13 and Moynihan for six to push out to CMU47. On the next play, Sheets picked up four more through the air and was given 15 additional yards as DC was called for a personal foul. It would take the Tartans eight more plays before Wamhoff hit pay dirt for the 42-21 advantage (Justin Caputo kick).
- The ensuing Devil possession would get all the way into the red zone, but would end without points as Klassen was picked off in the endzone. Runs of 37 and 10 by McGinnis IV set the stage for McGinnis IV to find Bouma for a two-yard touchdown catch and a 49-21 lead (Justin Caputo kick).
Fourth Quarter
- Another Dickinson turnover brought an abrupt end to a drive just over midfield on the CMU45. Shadrak Agyei would tote the rock four times during the possession culminating with a 24-yard touchdown carry (Justin Caputo kick).
- Sorensen would take the ensuing kickoff 42 yards up to the 50-yardline giving the Devils an excellent chance to get some more points. Klassen connected with Schmidt for 38 yards to the CMU12. However, during that play a roughing the passer penalty against Ty Kadur bumped the ball up to the six. On the following play Sorensen took the handoff from Klassen and raced into the house making it 56-29 thanks to a two-point conversion run for Boyer.
- The Tartans were not done scoring however as they used a 12-play 65-yard drive and a six-play, 63-yard march to rack up 14 more points setting the 70-29 final.
