Devils Dominant Pitching Blanks Beavers in Series Opener

CARLISLE, Pa. - First-year pitcher Sam Bliss tossed six shutout innings, before handing the ball off to senior Grayson Walker to slam the door on a two-hit 4-0 shutout over the host Caltech Beavers at Caltech North Field. Kaden Sigmon collected two RBIs on the day for the Red and White to pace the offense.

Pitching Decision - W - Sam Bliss (1-1) | L - Brendan Flaherty (2-3) | S - Grayson Walker (2)

  • Dickinson would claim the eventual game-winning run off Flaherty early in the game when with one on and two down, Matt Torres smacked an offering up the box to make it 1-0. Kyle Bailey would follow with a groundout to first retiring the side.
  • Bliss then went to the hill in the home-half and posted a perfect shutdown inning by recording a flyout, strikeout and groundout in order.
  • After a quiet second, Josh Markley ledoff the frame with an infield single to short, before Sigmon smashed an RBI single taking the lead to 2-0. Ryan Thompson walked and Torres singled to left filling the pillows with no one out for Bailey. He would produce a sacrifice fly to right driving home Sigmon stretching it to 3-0 after two-and-a-half.
  • William Minatel began the home-half with a single to center, but he could get no further as Bliss collected a strikeout and a pair of flyouts.
  • Pitching was the name of the game from innings four through six as neither side could get anything going offensively until Dickinson put two on with two down thanks to a Sigmon single and Thompson walk unfortunately, Torres grounded out to short ending the threat.
  • Walker replaced Bliss to open up the last of the frame and opened his outing wth a bang notching two strikeouts and a grounder to second.
  • Dylan Posencheg opened things up by being hit by a pitch, before another knock for Sigmon drove him across home plate to make it 4-0. After Sigmon was caught stealing second, back-to-back singles for Thompson and Torres gave DC the opportunity to extend their edge but Jacob Alderete got Bailey to flyout to send it to the bottom-half.
  • Walker would complete the Devils outstanding day on the mound by setting down the Beavers "three up, three down" courtesy of two strikeouts and a groundout to short.
