#14 Devils Use Big First Quarter to Help Rout Maroons

SALEM, Va. - The 14th-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team used a six-goal first quarter on Saturday afternoon to build up a lead that the host Roanoke College Maroons could never dig out of as the Red and White posted a 14-6 non-conference win at Kerr Stadium.

Template - 1st Quarter
  • Dickinson was able to take advantage of an early man-up opportunity as with Matthew Albertson in the box, Ethan Gess found Ben Monroe for the first of the day just 80-seconds in.
  • Three of the next four shots went the way of the hosts, but DC keeper Rocco Bognet was there to deny each chance which allowed Preston Boyd to setup Cullen Mulhern for a 2-0 lead with 10:26 left.
  • The Devils controlled the remainder of the first racking up the final 16 shots resulting in goals for Owen Binder (Charlie Baughan assist), Ramsey Huggins (Gess assist) and two more from Mulhern to make it 6-0.
  • Roanoke's goalie Alex Feuer was busy during that stretch as well recording six saves.
Template - 2nd Quarter
  • Neither offense could get on track through the first six-plus minutes as the teams combined for seven shots and six turnovers. Over that time Feuer turned away Landen Hyatt and Matt Thurston (2), while Bognet shutdown Blake Rieger.
  • Coming off of that Bognet stop, Dickinson would have a successful clear leading to Thurston putting the ball in the stick of Gess for the strike and a 7-0 advantage.
  • The Maroons finally got beyond Bognet at the 8:16 mark thanks to Wyatt Whitlow, before Rieger trimmed the gap to 7-2 just 32-seconds later.
  • Dickinson responded quite well though with Huggins finding Hagen McTear for the eighth and Mulhern connecting with Tommy Baldini for the 9-2 edge going to the break.
Template - 3rd Quarter
  • Roanoke came out of the locker room trying to get back into the game, but Bognet posted an early save against Julian Kammerman which got DC out in transition leading to McTear striking for the second time less than two minutes in (10-2).
  • After the ensuing faceoff win by Ben Trucksess, the visitors recorded the next four shots with Feuer stopping both Luke Whalen and Gess, before Monroe cashed in for the second time to make it 11-2 still with 12:10 to go.
  • Bognet preserved the cushion with two more stops, but Whitlow broke through to trim one off the margin at 11-3.
  • The final ten minutes would go by with no more scoring, while at the other end of the field Sam Bunten, Ethan Ferrant, Huggins and Whalen each caused a turnover.
Template - 4th Quarter
  • Three minutes in the Red and White opened the gap back up to nine with Charlie Baughan picking up an unassisted tally.
  • Dickinson kept piling it on thanks to Boyd and Huggins (Mac Childs assist) making the score 14-3 with 7:17 left.
  • The Maroons closed the game with a 3-0 run with two of them coming against Ben Tompkins who took over in cage at the 11:48 mark spelling Bognet who was strong all day.
