Devils Drop Conference Home Opener to Mules in Extras

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson baseball team took an early lead on Tuesday afternoon against the visiting Muhlenberg College as the Red and White went in search of their first Centennial Conference win of the year. Unfortunately for the Devils, they were not able to hold on as the Mules notched a 5-4 win in ten innings at MacPhail Field.

Quick Notes
Final Score - Mules 5, DEVILS 4 (F/10)
Records - Dickinson (9-11, 0-3 CC) | Muhlenberg (12-10, 2-1 CC)
Pitching Decision - W - Ethan Brochin (3-1) | L - Drew Norton (1-1)

  • Following a quiet top of the frame for DC starter Ben Myers, the Devils offense went to work in the bottom-half looking for an early lead. Ryan Thompason opened things with a single, before Luke Gartland reached on an error to put two on with no outs. After a pair of flyouts, Kevin Schmidt stepped into the box trying to get the home team on the board. During his at-bat a double steal would plate one, prior to his single to center giving DC a 2-0 edge.

  • The second and third frames saw each team put a runner on base, but could not get anyone across home.
  • Then in the top-half of the fourth, a single and error gave the Mules two in scoring position with two away for Sean Habeeb. He would cut the margin down to 2-1 entering the home-half of the frame on a single to right.
  • A leadoff walk issued to Josh Markley, was followed by a groundout and flyout to push him over to third with two away. That brought up Dylan Posencheg who pushed the DC advantage to 3-1 on a knock to left.
  • The Mules would answer the Devils solo run with one of their own during the front-half as a double from Jack Kent came in to score when Thomas Pranzo picked up a base knock to right. A wild pitch and walk continued to keep the MC rally going, but a single to left for Spencer Hobson would see Pranzo get thrown out at home to end the frame.
  • Starter Kieran Mulholland went back out to the hill looking for a shutdown inning trying to keep the deficit at one (3-2), which was exactly what he produced with two groundouts and a strikeout.
  • Charlie Bien took over on the mound for Myers to open things up. He immediately found some trouble with a walk, hit batter and single loading the bags for Aidan Legner. Legner worked the second free pass to force one across (3-3) and end Bien's outing as Drew Norton entered the game. He would give up a sacrifice fly (4-3) to the first man he faced, before getting a pair of flyouts to end things.
  • After Norton setdown the Mules in order during the top of the inning, Dickinson came up trying to at least draw even or even better take the lead. Both Kaden Sigmon and Markley flew out to begin leaving the Red and White with just one out to play with. A single into right for Schmidt and walks to Kyle Bailey and Posencheg set the starge for George Thorp to reach on an error plating one to tie the game. However, a strikeout out Will Ferris ended the threat.
  • Each team would get a base runner during the frame, but neither team was able to get anyone past first.

  • Two walks had runners at first and second for the Mules with one down. That was when Norton was replaced on the mound by Sam Bliss. Unfortunately, the first man he faced was Ken who made 5-4 going to the home-half of the tent with a single to left.
  • In the home-half, Christian Kim opened things with a single, before two groundouts and a flyout ended the game.
  • Myers - 5.0 ip, 8 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), 1 walk, 6 strikeouts
  • Bien - 0.0 ip, 1 hits, 2 runs (earned), 2 walks, 0 strikeouts
  • Norton (L) - 4.2 ip, 2 hits, 1 runs (earned), 3 walks, 1 strikeout
  • Bliss - 0.2 ip, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks, 0 strikeouts
  • Hits - Schmidt (2)
  • RBIs - Posencheg and Schmidt (1)
  • Runs Scored - Nathan Bowman, Gartland, Markley and Thompson (1)
  • Dickinson (9-11) finishes up their two-game set with the Mules on Friday afternoon at 3:30pm in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
