Fifth-Seed Devils Leave Shorewomen Marooned in CC First Round

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Dickinson women's tennis team kept their magical season going on Wednesday afternoon in the First Round of the Centennial Conference Tournament as the fifth-seeded Devils sailed past the fourth seed Washington College Shorewomen by a score of 4-2 at the Schottland Tennis Center.

Doubles (Shorewomen 2-1)
The home side claimed the pivotal doubles point with wins at one and three. First, the top pair of Eva Kading and Soleil Namunyola defeated the Jenna Crain-Natasha Sharnoff unit 2-6. Dickinson would then even things up thanks to the second duo of Alisa Steele and Loretta Szych taking down Jayda Browne and Sofia Sperandei (6-3). The deciding match went to the Shorewomen where Gaby Coutts and Isabella Sorhegui had just enough to hold off Izzy Desjardins and Chloe Heller by a score of 4-6.

Singles (DEVILS 4-1)
Crain immediately brought the Red and White even by pounding Namunyola at the number one spot 6-0, 6-2. Dickinson then claimed their first lead with Anabelle Armendarez dispatching of Coutts on the six line in a two-set shutout (6-0, 6-0). Washington responded with Sorhegui besting Sharnoff at the third flight by margins of 2-6, 4-6. A spot above that was where Steele brought down Kading in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) to move DC a match away from advancing. At four, Bowne and Heller needed to go the distance to determine a winner. First, Heller held on for a 7-5 tiebreak win in the opening set to take it 7-6. Then, Browne came back with a vengeance to nab the ensuing set (2-6), but Heller would not be denied rallying in the deciding third to claim the match by a score of 6-3. With the match already having a victor, the fifth match between Szych and Sperandei was left unfinished, but the Devil was a game away from sealing the win leading (6-7, 6-2, 5-2).
