Devils and Shoremen Split Conference DH in Carlisle

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson baseball team fell victim to a late game rally from the visiting Washington College Shoremen in game one on Saturday afternoon as the guests claimed an 11-1 win. However, in the second game it was the Red and White that used a two-run homer from Kaden Sigmon to take the lead in the fifth and never look back claiming a 7-4 win at MacPhail Field.

Inside the Game
  • Buzza and DiGrazio got the better of the hitters for the opening two-and-a-half innings as things stayed scoreless as the game entered the last of the third. Singles from Shawn Arneja and Kevin Schmidt had two on with two down, but a strikeout of Matt Torres stalled any rally.
  • Two singles and a double for the Shoremen in the top of the fifth made it 1-0, before Brady Wozniak provided a sacrifice fly to center pushing the lead to 2-0 heading to the home-half. Dickinson got singles from Ryan Thompson, Arneja and Schmidt in the home portion, but were unable to get anyone across.
  • An inning later, Washington used two singles and a walk to fill the bags with no one out. Buzza then got Chase Ruppel to bounce into a double play that plated one. The next man was Zach Stolze who came up with an RBI single to right for a 4-0 lead entering the seventh.
  • A double and walk to kickoff the seventh led to Charlie Bien entering the game for Buzza. A sacrifice bunt and walk loaded the bags, before a fielder's choice plated one. After Drew Kinsey was hit by a pitch, Ruppel cleared the bases with a three-run double followed by an RBI knock for Stolze extending the margin to 9-0.
  • Thompson opened up the home-half of the frame with a walk. Two batters later Schmidt stuck a single to right putting men on the corners with one down. Torres would then deliver a sac fly to right driving home one. A walk to Dylan Posencheg had men at first and second, but a popout to the catcher shutdown any further rally.

Inside the Game
  • Dickinson got right on the board in the bottom of the first against McCloskey as one out knocks from Josh Markley and Schmidt allowed Torres to produce another sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. A single by Kaden Sigmon and free pass worked by Luke Gartland filled the cushions, but a lineout to right from Kyle Bailey ended the inning.
  • Washington got the run right back during the top of the second off of Peichel thanks to a single and an RBI double. However, the Devils rallied back in the bottom-half as a single off the bat of Posencheg later came around to score when Thompson singled to left. Unfortunately, Markley bounced into an inning-ending double play.
  • The Shoremen used the top part of the fourth to grab the lead. Stolze ledoff with a single to right which was then followed immediately by a two-run shot for Alex Dardaris. An inning later it became 4-2 visitors when Kinsey began the frame with a solo jack to left.
  • Dickinson would rally back though getting three of their own in the fifth. A double by Thompson and a wild pitch allowed Markley to drive him home with a sac fly. Two men later Torres was plunked by a pitch with two gone, before Sigmon blasted a go-ahead two-run bomb over the right-field fence making it 5-4 heading to the sixth.
  • Peichel made the lead stand up over his final two frames allowing a double in the seventh, but letting the runner go no further.
  • Drew Norton took over on the hill for the eighth and gave up a two-out hit by a pitch, prior to inducing a groundout to short. Then in the bottom-half, a single for Bailey and intentional walk of Thompson gave the Devils two runners with two away for Markley. He delivered some huge insurance runs thanks to a two-run single into center stretching the advantage to 7-4 through eight.
