GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Dickinson baseball team hung tough with one of the best team's not only in the Centennial Conference, but in the nation on Wednesday afternoon as the Red and White ventured down to No. 16 Gettysburg College for a pivotal conference clash. Unfortunately, for the Devils despite grabbing an early lead the host Bullets rallied back to claim a 7-3 win at Kirchhoff Field.
Quick Notes
Final Score - No. 16 Bullets 7, DEVILS 3Â
Records - Dickinson (10-14, 1-6 CC) | Gettysburg (24-5, 3-4 CC)
Pitching Decision - W - Brendan Trotta (2-1) | L -
Drew Norton (1-2) | S - Tyler Lizell (4)
- Brendan Trotta took the hill for the home side to open the game and ran into some trouble as a leadoff single by Ryan Thompson, double for Kevin Schmidt and a free pass worked by Kaden Sigmon filled the bags with two away. That brought Luke Gartland to the dish and he would make it 1-0 with a walk to force home Thompson. Unfortunately, the rally came to an abrupt halt when Kyle Bailey flew out to right for the final out.
- Ben Myers went to the slab for the Red and White and allowed a pair of base runners, but worked out of any trouble with a strikeout of Dominick Balsamo to end the frame.
- Despite picking up a two-out base hit from Thompson, Dickinson was not able to get anyone across in the top-half. Then, during the home portion with two gone and one one, consecutive doubles by Robert Murphy and Jack Burke plated a pair of runners giving the Bullets a 2-1 edge still with one on for Jack Pistner. Fortunately, Myers settled in and got him to pop-up to third for the last out.
- The Devils used the first three batters of the inning to draw even at 2-2. First, Schmidt singled up the middle, before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from Matt Torres. That presented Sigmon with the opportunity to send the Trotta offering into center leveling the game. However, a flyout and pickoff closed out the top-half.
- The home-half saw Myers post a much needed shutdown frame recording two strikeouts and inducing a groundout to first.
- The game remained locked at 2-2 until the last of the fifth when an error and two infield singles loaded the bases with no outs for the Bullets. After a strikeout of Jack Amirata by reliever Drew Norton, Balsamo ripped a two-bagger into right-center driving home a pair for a 4-2 lead. Norton would then strikeout Matt Nichols and get a flyout from Will Roche to close things out.
- A two-out double from Kyle Bailey gave the Red and White a chance to dig into the gap, but a strikeout of Dylan Posencheg sent things to the last of the sixth.
- Koll Peichel became the third pitcher of the afternoon for the Devils and set the Bullets down in order with two flyouts and a strikeout.
- A walk to Sigmon and infield hit by Gartland had the Red and White thinking comeback with two on and one out. After a fielder's choice for Bailey forced out Gartland heading to second and left men on the corners for Posencheg. Unfortunately, he grounded back to Lizell on the mount to stall the threat.
- The home portion saw Austin Buzza take to the hill and after two quick outs the Bullets had four straight men reach, including a big two-run single off the back of Burke to make it 7-3 heading to the ninth.
- Shawn Arneja opened the frame by being hit by a pitch and then after advancing 90-feet on a wild pitch he crossed home thanks to a single up the box for Josh Markley to set the 7-3 final.
