Summer Check-In
Where are you working/interning this summer? Company and Location.
Department of Developmental Services Northeast region at Hogan Regional Center, Danvers MA
Please describe your day-to-day responsibilities in this position.
I do hands on work with adult individuals to help them complete daily routines in both a home and work setting that have developmental disabilities and psychosocial issues. I was also offered the opportunity to shadow a speech language pathologist to gain a better understanding of the work she does with this population.
What made this experience appealing to you?
I get to work directly with a more severe population of individuals with Autism which gives me more exposure to the field I want to work in.
How does this experience relate to your career or life aspirations? What are you looking to personally get out of it?
I want to be a speech language pathologist in the future; This internship is giving me both the chance to see the clinical reasoning behind treatment plans and getting to implement it doing direct care. It is also a great exposure to a new setting to see if this is a population I would want to work with.
How has your athletics career prepared you for this role?
Being in athletics has taught me how to work as a team with others and build community. Working as a team is a very important aspect of this job when making decisions to best fit the individuals we are working with.
What are you looking forward to for this upcoming year for your sport?
I am excited to spend one last year with the team and getting to see more growth throughout the year. The team has been working very hard and getting to see it pay off at the end of the season is always the most rewarding.
Is there anything else you are looking forward to this summer outside of this experience?
I’m looking forward to getting to hang out with friends by going on hikes, beach trips, and going out to eat before starting my senior year.
