Devils Split First Two Games of Washington Trip on Friday

WASHINGTON - The Dickinson baseball team fought "tooth and nail" for more than 18 innings on Friday against both Stevens Institute of Technology and Catholic University. The Red and White unfortunately came out on the wrong side of a 3-2 decision against the Ducks in the first game, before a tenth inning RBI by John Kumpa propelled the Red and White to a 4-3 extra inning win over the host Cardinals on day one of the Matt Kurkjian ALS Awareness Invitational at Talbot Field.

Game One
Final Score – Ducks 3, DEVILS 2
Records - DEVILS 1-1 | Stevens 3-0
Pitching Decision – W – Erik Sibbach (1-0) | L – Ben Myers (0-1) | S – Garret Wolf (1)

Inside the Game
  • Following a scoreless first, Dickinson would pick up the first run of the game during the top of the second when a walk to Luke Gartland with two away led to an RBI double off the stick of Ethan Sodl. However, that would be the only run as Freeman Hunt went down on strikes against Sibbach ending the threat. In the home-half, Myers allowed a leadoff two-bagger to Griffin Zitko, but then retired the next three hitters.
  • Stevens would draw level during the last of the third with a walk and single putting runners on the corners for Dylan Fishbough who produced a sacrifice fly to center.
  • Pitching was strong over the next two innings with both Myers and Sibbach working hard to navigate a little bit of traffic keeping the game locked at 1-1 entering the sixth.
  • Dylan Posencheg posted a single to left in the top of the frame and stole second, but was ultimately left there after Johnny Bruno struck out and Kyle Bailey grounded out. A walk and single put two Ducks on with one gone in the home-half. Myers was then lifted for Zander Leckszas who allowed a single to load the bags, before a walk and wild pitch let two cross (3-1). A fielder's choice and a walk reloaded the cushions with two out for Fishbough. He faced the third arm of the frame as Glen Cantalupo Jr. was summoned from the pen and induced a grounder for the final out.
  • Dickinson would be unable to provide an answer in the seventh, but was able to tally again during the eighth against Evan Carrier. A free pass to Will Ferris and base hit for Josh Markley had both in scoring position for Posencheg. He would groundout to short driving home Ferris to cut it down to 3-2. Unfortunately, a groundout and strikeout prevented DC from drawing even. The Red and White put together one final opportunity in the ninth  as singles for Gartland and Ferris along with a walk to Ryan O'Connor put men everywhere, but they never crossed home.

Inside the Game
  • Dickinson had a chance to strike first as walks to Posencheg and Bailey along with a base hit for Schmidt loaded the bases with two down bringing up Gartland. That was when Cardinals started Richard Belli dug down and picked up a much needed strikeout. Catholic would get a couple of base runners against Sam Bliss in the bottom half of the first, but a strikeout of Jack Bateman ended the frame.
  • Following a "three-up, three-down" top of the second, a leadoff single and stolen base for Lance Eilbacher had a runner at second (0 outs). After Bliss retired Matthew Fisher, Eilbacher swiped third and then scored on an errant throw. A flyout and strikeout closed out the inning.
  • After giving up the run during the second, Bliss seized control of the game on the hill setting down nine of the next ten men he faced over the next three innings to keep the score at 1-0. Unfortunately, during that same stretch the Red and White would have a couple of base runners, but were not able to drive anyone across the dish as the game entered the sixth still 1-0.
  • A walk to Posencheg and Schmidt being plunked by the offering from Belli put two on with no one out. That was when Bruno struck a single to center plating one. That chased Belli from the game and brought on Brennan O'Keefe. He walked Gartland to fill the pillows with one gone. Matt Conforti and Sodl then each provided an RBI to put the Devils ahead 3-1 entering the bottom-half. Drew Norton went to the mound for DC and got an immediate groundout, before giving up a single to Sammy Burman. Norton then got Logan Eilbacher to hit into an inning-ending double play stalling any potential rally.
  • Dickinson had an opportunity to add onto their advantage during the seventh as two walks and a single loaded the base one down. However, Sean Murphy was then able to retire the ensuing two batters. Catholic chipped away at the deficit in the last of the frame using a triple and a single to make it 3-2. Fortunately, Norton got a lineout and strikeout to retire the side.
  • The Devils loaded the bases in the ninth, but came up empty. Then, with the Cards facing last call Charlie Bien was sent to the hill trying to lock up the win. After putting away the first hitter, a walk and error gave the hosts a pair of runners including the potential game-winning run. Two batters later with two down Gabriel Ruiz singled out into right-center plating the tying run and forcing extras.
  • Two walks helped DC to put themselves in a position to try and take the lead with two gone in the top of the tenth bringing up John Kumpa. He produced an RBI knock to left-center making it 4-3. Unfortunately, the Red and White could not add on as Schmidt was set down on strikes for the last out. Bien stayed on the hill for another opportunity to close things out. A pair of singles had men at the corners with two down, but Bien got Taig McErlane swinging on strike three to end a wild game.
