Tenth-Ranked Seahawks Overpower Devils in Nation's Capital

WASHINGTON - Coming off two hard-fought down to wire games yesterday at the Matt Kurkjian ALS Awareness Invitational against both Stevens Institute of Technology and the host Catholic University the Dickinson baseball team was back at it less than 24-hours later against the tenth-ranked Seahawks of Salve Regina University. Unfortunately, for the Red and White it was the Seahawks who came out on top 16-0 at Talbot Field.

Game Information
Final Score - #10 Seahawks 16, DEVILS 0
Records - DEVILS 2-2 | Salve Regina 1-1
Pitching Decision - W: Nolan Romanowski (1-0) | L: Nolan Ross (0-1)

Inside the Game
  • The Seahawks were out of the gates fast against Ross using three walks, a fielder's choice and an error to take a 2-0 heading to the last of the first. Dickinson attempted to answer back as a base hit for JD Stemhagen, walk to Kevin Schmidt and Josh Markley getting hit by a pitch filled the bags with one down. However, Luke Gartland bounced into an inning-ending double play.
  • Salve Regina added on during the top of the second with three walks and a hit batter scoring one and keeping the cushions stuffed for Shea Donovan who cleared the bags with a double to left. Evan Connery then took over on the bump and surrendered a pair of RBI hits, while allowing two men to cross on a balk to extend the margin to 10-0 after two.
  • Austin Buzza entered the game in the third and pitched four scoreless frames for the Devils. During that stretch, Will Ferris, Ethan Sodl, Gartland, Schmidt and Stemhagen collected hits for DC, but none were ever able to cross home as the game entered the seventh.
  • James Pedas replaced Buzza to begin the frame and issued two walks and hit a batter to load the bases for Brady Smolinski who worked a free pass himself to drive in another run. Walks drawn by Matt Conforti, Ferris and Stemhagen gave DC a chance to crack the scoreboard with two gone. Unfortunately, Ben Milligan flew out to centerfield retiring the side.
  • Michael Niszczak pitched a scoreless eighth and turned the ball over to Luke Nemeth for the ninth. The Seahawks recorded three walks and two hits during a five-run frame to finish off the 16-0 final.
