CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Dickinson women's team needed some time on Saturday afternoon to completely find their game as strong winds and cold weather delayed the team bus and pushed the start of the game back almost two hours. The Red and White found their game coming out of the halftime break using a 21-point third to turnaround a 29-23 deficit into a 59-49 conference win over the host Washington College at Penny Fall Gymnasium.
Milestone for Head Coach Aby Diop
- With today's victory Red Devils head coach Aby Diop reached 100 wins so far during her head coaching career.
- When asked about reaching the milestone Coach Diop stated "I could not reach this great accomplishment without all the support I have had from all the administrators, my assistant coaches and of course all of my players who have trusted me throughout this incredible journey. A coach is nothing without their players and I have been incredibly fortunate to work with some great ones throughout my career. This accomplishment is as much for them as it is for me."
First Quarter
- The Devils were showing no ill effects of the delay early as four points for Victoria Zerbe and a triple by Addison Cadwell made it 7-2 with 3:21 gone.
- Two straight layups from Kaitlyn Boggs were answered with a trey out of the hands of Clare Cronley to keep the margin at 10-6 two minutes later.
- Boggs continued her strong start to the game with two foul shots and a layup to draw level at 10, before two at the stripe by Maggie Lawrence moved the Shorewomen ahead 12-11 through one.
Second Quarter
- Hits on the charity line for Mia Chapman and Zerbe tied the score at 13-13, before a layup from Abby Meredith sparked an 8-0 sail for WAC to jump ahead 21-13 with 3:14 left. During that stretch DC missed ten straight shots despite having multiple second chance after hauling in six offensive rebounds within that frame.
- A minute later Gabby Smelcer in preparation for tomorrow's Super Bowl intercepted a pass from Emma Robinson that resulted in her getting a pass up to Cadwell who scored the "touchdown" (correction the layup) trimming it by two (21-15).Â
- Triples by Peyton Berger and Meredith surrounded a long-range shot for Jelena Subasic making it 27-18 inside the final minute.
- Dickinson ended the frame with five of the last seven points thanks to free throws converted by the duo of Cadwell and Zerbe (29-23).
Third Quarter
- The Red and White were hot from deep early in the period as Lizzie McGrath and Cronley each splashed down, while Cadwell added a layup to finish off the 11-0 romp giving DC the 34-29 advantage with two minutes off the clock.
- In response the home side got four points from Boggs and three by Sarah O'Leary to erase the Devils lead tying the score at 36-36.
- The trio of Emma Landes, McGrath and Subasic rallied back for Dickinson to reclaim a slim edge at 41-38 with 8:15 gone.
- Subasic knocked home a three to make it 44-38, but a buzzer-beater from Meredith cut the deficit back to 44-41 after 30 minutes.
Fourth Quarter
- Boggs used the opening four minutes to try and single-handedly keep the host in the game scoring their first five points, while Cronley buried a triple for the Devils to leave DC ahead by one (47-46).
- Layups by Esther Nlebemuo and Chapman coupled with a pair at the charity line for Cronley extended the visitors advantage to 53-46 still with half the period to play.
- After Meredith stuck another trey, the Shorewomen would not score the rest of the way as one jumper each for the trio of McGrath, Nlebemuo and Zerbe closed out the ten-point win (59-49).
