COCOA BEACH, Fla. - First year
Merve Uyumazturk secured the decisive team point with a straight set win at fourth singles to power the Dickinson women's tennis team to a 4-3 non-conference win over Saint Mary's College of Indiana on Tuesday morning at the Racquet Club of Cocoa Beach.
Doubles (Belles 2-1 | Count as one point in team score)
Saint Mary's began the day with a 6-2 win at number three thanks to Anna Gardner and Odessa Norton knocking off
Alisa Steele and
Loretta Szych. The Red and White responded at top slot where the duo of
Jenna Crain and
Natasha Sharnoff edged out Shannon Dudy-Emma Kealy (7-5). The deciding match featured
Anabel Romero Gemmell and Uyumazturk taking on Evelyn Demblans-Dechans and Sophia Pischalko. With the score tied at 6-6, it would be the Belles who won the tiebreak 7-4 to clinch the doubles point.
Singles (Devils 4-2)
SMC pushed their advantage to 2-0 after Dudy bested Sharnoff by scores of 6-4 and 6-1. The Red and White were pushed to the brink of defeat following Pischalko's 6-4, 6-0 victory over
Chloe Heller. However, the Devils responded with Steele defeating Gardner at the two spot by identical 6-3 scores. A slot ahead of her was where Crain held off Kealy in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. With DC still facing a 3-2 deficit Szych squared the match up with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph versus Lanie Brant. As the match hung in the balance at the number four flight Demblans-Dechans battled Uyumazturk. The first set required a tiebreak with the level at 6-6, Uyumazturk posted a 7-4 win to move one step away from victory. She then had just a little more in the tank than Demblans-Dechans collecting a 7-5 win to give the Devils the match.
